Jewish Publication Society Marks 75th Anniversary; Re-Elect Satinsky President; Honor Judge Horace Stern (Special to The Jewish News) PHILADELPHIA, Pa.—Marking its 75th anniversary, at the annual meeting held here Sunday, the Jewish Publication Society of America dedicated its remodeled building and announced plans for a continuing program of book pub- lishing that will include a mini- mum of 15 classics and several new paperbacks during the corn- ing year. Sol Satinsky was reelected president of the society at sessions held during the afternoon at the JPS building on North 15th Street. In the evening, at the anniversary dinner at the Warwick Hotel, Judge Horace Stern, who was elected honorary president of the society, was honored on the occa- sion of his having rounded out 50 . years of service to the society. Three speakers—Dr. Solomon Grayzel, who was reelected edi- - tor of the society; Edwin Wolf II, who was reelected chairman of the publications committee, and Morris Wolf, father of Ed- win, who had himself served for a number of years as a JPS trus- tee and whose father, Edwin Wolf I, was a JPS president— outlined the history of JPS, de- scribed the dire need for the JPS as a Jewish educational medium in this country and urged uninterrupted aid for the movement as one of the vital means of strengthening Amer- ican Jewry in its aims for crea- tivity and survival. Joseph M. First, vice president of the society, was chairman of the day and toastmaster at the din- ner. Justice Stern was named hon- orary president, along with Judge Louis E. Levinthal and J. Solis- Cohen, Jr. Joseph M. First and David C. Melnicoff were newly elected vice UJA's Top Leaders End Three-Day Probe of Immediate Needs ONCHIOT A, N.Y. (JTA) — Twenty-three members of the exec- utive committee of the United Jewish Appeal, made up of top leaders of the UJA and commu- nity leaders from all over the eountry, concluded a three-day concentrated examination of the immediate and long range respon- sibilities facing UJA, in the orga- nization's first executive commit- tee retreat. Led by Joseph Meyerhoff of Baltimore, UJA general chair- man, and Rabbi Herbert A. Friedman, UJA executive vice chairman, the UJA's policy- making leaders held an extended consideration of immigration, absorption and allied problems in Israel along with continuing and changing Jewish needs in Europe, North Africa and other ovreseas areas. The retreat also considered problems of campaigning and building leadership in 1965. Louis Pincus, treasurer of the Jewish Agency for Israel, and Moses A. Leavitt, executive vice chairman of the Joint Distribution Committee, reviewed the needs facing their organizations. Special reports were given to the gather- ing by Myrtle H. Karp, national UJA Women's Division chairman, and Charles Bensley, member of a special national conference on Is- rael education problems Sept. 17- 18 in New York City under UJA auspices. Others who reported• at the re- treat included M. M. Warburg, chairman of the Joint Distribution Committee; William Rosenwald, honorary chairman of the United Jewish Appeal; and Mrs. Rose Halprin, chairman of the Amer- ican Section of the Jewish Agency for Israel.
