Ecumenical Declaration

There have been certain doubts among some American Jewish
leaders as to the nature of the declaration on Catholic-Jewish relations
which the Ecumenical Council is expected to adopt at its forthcoming
session this fall . . . The audience given by Pope Paul VI to a delegation
of the American Jewish Committee has greatly contributed to the dis-
pelling of these doubts . . . I understand that the Pontiff was told by
the delegation that Jewish world expects from the Ecumenical Council
the absolution of the Jews from the blame of crucifying Jesus . . .
Morris Abram, who is president of the American Jewish Committee
headed the delegation, emphasized especially that the possible rectfica-
tion of the deicide story has aroused keen expectation in the United
States . . . At present, all cardinals and bishops in the United States
— with the exception of one — are practically committed to support
at the Ecumenical Council a declaration on Catholic-Jewish relations
drafted in the Vatican So are the cardinals and bishops from France,
Belgium, Germany, Latin American countries and even some from
ro
Spain . . . However, there is still strong opposition to such a declaration
on the part of some Italian bishops and, of course, on the part of some
70 Arab bishops.

S pa n ish Jews Form Council, Seek Franco's Recognition

LONDON (JTA) — The forma-
tion of a Council of Jewish Com-
munities of Spain, comprised of
Jewish communal bodies in four
cities, was reported here from Ma-
drid. The Council represents
Spain's 5,000 Jews in Madrid, Bar-
celona, Ceuta and Melilla. The last
two cities are in the Spanish en-
clave of Morocco.

The report said that Max Mazin,
leader of the Madrid Jewish com-
munity would seek an interview
with Generalissimo Francisco
Franco to secure official recogni-
tion from the Spanish government
for the Council and for Spanish
Jewry as a religious group.
The Roman Catholic Church
is the only recognized religious
group in Spain. Jews and some
30,000 Protestants are permitted
to worship in unmarked build-
ings under a statement of tol-
erance approved in 1945.

Jews and Protestants are allowed
to buy property for worship only
as private individuals, not under
corporate names.
