Pencil and the good old reliable
Chambord .. . Starting with "first
things first," the Colony, 30 East
61st, is undoubtedly one of the
most elegant restaurants in the
country . . . Typically, like many
really good restaurants, they have
almost as many bus boys, waiters
and captains as they do customers
— it's about a one-to-one ratio . , .
But out of this mass of humanity,
come some really wonderful vit-
ties . ... Next time you visit the
Colony, try the eggs benedict with
a battle of chablis . . . We shared
this dish with Governor Nelson
Rockefeller . . . albeit, he was at a
different table.
ONE OF THE MOST popular
restaurant men in New York today
is John Bruno .. • Back in the dear
dead days beyond recall, John
ran a very fine restaurant fre-
quented largely by newspapermen,
indigent class at best . . . He has
been so successful at his trade that
today, he serves only managing
editors, publishers, celebrities and
other dubious types who are no-
toriously well-to-do . . The Pen
and Pencil, 205 East 45th St. has
a very simple menu — their stock
in trade is steak in various sizes
and conditions, but it is all good
. . . Really good, cuttable (if we
may coin a word) with a fork.
AS USUAL, WE could not resist
a trip to Philip Rosen's Chambord,
803 3rd Avenue ... Here is a place
reputed to be one of the swankiest
restaurants in the country, and
yet the manner is so completely
informal, the personnel so charm-
ing, that one might very well be
in the neighborhood beanery talk-
ing to Joe and Irene . .. The only
difference is that the Chambord
has especially good food and re-
markable handsome prices ... Our
dinner there consisted of sliced

BACK IN DETROIT . . . Al
Rosenberg is just about ready to
open his strictly kosher Holiday
Manor eatery on W. 8 Mile Rd.,
just East of Greenfield . . . Would
have been opened last week except
for interior construction delays
.. . A lot of folks are waiting with
mouth watering anticipation of the
rare delicacies Al will serve . .
The carry-out will be fabulous .
Imagine — whatever you want
strictly kosher brought right into
your home!
SAKSEYS LOUNGE on Wood-
ward has added the ivory tinglings
of Bernie Katz at the piano bar
to its list of good reasons why it's
the place to go ... Sakseys, by the
way, is the only restaurant in De-
troit with a different variety of
appetizers each night to whet the
palate from the smorgasbord table
. . . Always one or more surprise
features.
THE STAGE Delicatessen in
Oak Park belongs in the category
of good places to eat . . . A very
fine combination is service, tasty
food and pleasant atmosphere . .
The Stage Delicatessen has it!
NEW COLOR MOTIF of Katz's
Delicatessen in Oak Park is red
and black . . . Katz's is open again
. . . smartly decorated, but above
all still a very good delicatessen.
