Progressive Exposes Home-Grown Version of Nazi Racism in the U. S.

The National States Rights Party,
characterized in the June issue of
Progressive magazine as "a horn-
grown version of Nazi racism,"
now claims—perhaps correctly—
to be America's largest third party,
with membership in 38 states.
The NSRP publishes a national
newspaper, Thunderbolt, and state
newspapers in New York, Florida,
California, Ohio, Louisiana, Ark-
ansas and Missouri which trans-
mit the party's policies to follow-
ers around the country.
The goals, methods, and growth
of the Birmingham-based party,
which has absorbed a number of
smaller groups around the coun-
try and has succeeded so far in
placing its 1964 candidates for
President and Vice President on
the ballot in Arkansas and Kent-
ucky, are described in the June
issue of The Progressive maga-
zine, out today.
The NSRP has printed as many
as 50,000 copies of a single issue
of The Thunderbolt, for national
distribution, which may be a pos-
sible clue to its membership since
$5 a year pays for both a member-
ship and a yearly subscription.
"Party literature claims units
in 38 states and active units in
many large cities," the Progress-
ive article reports. "Besides Bir-
mingham there is some activity

in Chicago, New York, Los
Angeles, Atlanta, Jacksonville
(Florida), and Washington, D.C.
As far back as 1960, when the
NSRP was in its infancy, it was
able to muster 500 demonstra-
tors for its cause in Los Angeles
alone."

By action of its national con-
vention, held in March 1964 at
Louisville, Kentucky, the National
States Rights Party nominated
John Kasper for President and
Jesse B. Stoner for Vice President
Kasper is organizer of the Seaboard
White Citizens Council. Stoner, the
NSRP's legal counselor, is former
Imperial Wizard of the Christian
Knights of the Ku Klux Klan.

"The NSRP candidates are al-
ready on the ballot in Kentucky
and Arkansas," the Harris-Wilson
article continues, "and the party
is attempting to get on the ballot
in other states with the notable ex-
ception of Alabama. The exception
of Alabama results from the
NSRP's great admiration for Gov-
ernor George C. Wallace, their
favorite among Southern politicans.
The party worked for the slate
of unpledged electors scheme

which Wallace succeeded in win-
ning in Alabama" this month.

The NSRP has absorbed the
United White Party, the Con-
s e r v a t i v e Party of America,
another States Rights Party, the
Constitution Party of Iowa, and
several other small . groups while
drawing some individuals from
White Councils and the Klan. The
top leaders of the NSRP are anti-
Semites, former Klansmen, and
leaders of the absorbed parties.
Next come militant segregationists
"attracted to the party because of
the partial failure of white resis-
tance efforts to stem desegrega-
tion." Lower down are "youthful
adherents who are attracted by
uniforms, the conspiratorial nat-

`Commander' of Nazis
Laughed At by Students

SAN FRANCISCO (JTA)—Jew-
ish students at the University of
California who had planned a dem-
onstration at an appearance of an
American Nazi party spokesman
were persuaded not to do so by
Jewish community relations offi-
cials. As a result, Ralph Forbes,
"western division commander" of
the Nazis, was virtually laughed
off the stage by an audience of
campus who refrained from booing
or other disorder.
At the end of 14 minutes of a
scheduled 45-minute speech, the
Nazi gave up and asked for writ-
ten questions. He had been liter-
ally laughed out of making his
presentation. University authori-
ties had given careful considera-
tion to permitting Forbes to speak
at the university and decided that
freedom of speech should be up-
held even for a Nazi crackpot but
that all preparations should be
taken against violence of any kind.
When the plans of the Jewish
students became known, a meeting
of Jewish campus leaders was
called at the Hillel House at which
representatives of the local Anti-
Defamation League and the San
Francisco and Oakland Jewish

ure of the party, and its militant
activist approach."
The party hopes to become a
mass movement, "following trails
blazed by the Klan," which at
its peak in the Twenties had a
national membership of four
million, the Progressive article
notes.
The immediate danger of the
NSRP, state Harris and Wilson,
"lies in its proven ability to in-
filtrate other groups and use to
its advantage the fears of a com-
munity in racial crisis . . . What
happened and is happening i n
Birmingham is not so singular that
it cannot happen elsewhere, for
Birmingham is merely an exag-
geration of every city with a real,
or even an imagined racial prob-
lem. Whether the six-year-old Na-
tional State Rights Party grows, or
declines to the point where even
a Wallace disavows it, will be de-
cided by the manner in which
communities throughout the na-
tion face advancing desegrega-
tion."
