Federation Women's Division Annual
Meeting Wednesday to Honor Sobeloffs
Preparations for an original musical skit at the annual meeting
of the Jewish Welfare Federation Women's Division, Wednesday, 1
p.m., at the Jewish Center, were made by the group shown, from left:
Mesdames Sidney R. Jacobs, Joseph J. Bittker, Gabriel Glantz, Nor-
man Rosenfeld. Julian S. Tobias and Sidney J. Winer, Mrs. Seymour
Kraus is at the piano. Entitled "This Was the Time That Was," and
dedicated, according to the division president, Mrs. Philip R.
Marcuse, to Isidore Sobeloff, founder of the division, the skit will
include Mesdames Gabriel Glantz, Joseph Bittker, Sidney R. Jacobs,
Norman Rosenfeld, Albert Feurring, Jay M. Kogan, Seymour Rowe
and Julian S. Tobias. A reception honoring Mr. and Mrs. Sobeloff
will be a highlight of the program. Election of officers will take
place at the meeting. Mrs. Benjamin Jones has been nominated for
president.. Other nominees are: Mesdames Lewis S. Grossman, Arthur
H. Rice, Harold A. Robinson and Isadore Winkelman, vice-presidents;
David Randleman, corresponding secretary; N. Brewster Broder,
recording secretary.

More than 1,000,000 New York-
ers of all races and faiths were
served last year by the 116 medi-
cal, social service and recreational
agencies of the Federation of
Jewish Philanthropies of New
York, it was reported at the 47th
annual meeting of the organiza-
tion.

Sylvan J. Ginsburgh, principal of

School, received his Doctor of Phil-
osophy degree at Dropsie College
at the Founders Day Convocation
in Philadelphia,, Tuesday.
The subject of Dr. Ginsburgh's
thesis was: "An Historical Study
of Adult Hebrew Language In-
struction in Palestine from 1917
to 1948 and of its Continuation in
Israel's Ylpanim, 1948 to 1960."
During a year's stay in Israel
with his family, 1959-60, Dr. Gins-
burgh interviewed President Zal-
man Shazer, the late President It-
zhak Ben-Zvi, Moshe Sharett and
others.
The chairman of the department
that considered Dr. Ginsburgh's
dissertation was Dr. Meyer Ben-
Horin.
The dissertion will be printed in
Israel.

A three-year study of the treat-
ment and prevention of mental
impairment among the aged will
be undertaken by the Council of
Jewish Federations and Welfare
Funds, it was announced by Louis
Stern, president of the Council
and chairman of its health serv-
ices committee.
Financed by a $224,640 grant
from the National Institute of
Mental Health, the project will be
conducted by a team of research
scientists who will explore the
nature of mental disturbance and
deterioration (popularly known as
senility) among the elderly in
Jewish and non-Jewish homes for
the aged.

Sol Plafkin, attorney and com-
munity worker, Detroit resident for
34 years, announced his candidacy
for the Detroit Board of Education.
Plafkin, who has taught in the
Detroit school system for 10 years,

tion' for all the children of De-
troit."
He was a building representative
for the Detroit Federation of
Teachers, chairman of the 15th Dis-
trict Young Democrats, and is a
member of the NAACP, TULC and
