Russians Eying Maccabi Gaines By Jesse and Roy Silver It's beginning to look as if the Russians are serious about par- ticipating in some manner in the Seventh World Maccabiah Games slated for Israel during the sum- mer of 1965. The Israeli daily sports news- paper, Chadshot Hasport, reports that a third secretary of the Soviet embassy in Israel recently visited the Maccabi World Union headquarters in Tel Aviv and re- quested information about the Games. This was a follow-up to an invitation extended last year that Russian athletes participate. The Soviet secretary was told by Dr. Robert Atlasz of the MWU that while only Jewish athletes compete in the Maccabiah Games, other nations have sent outstand- ing athletes to stage exhibitions during the opening and closing ceremonies. Among the Russian names that came up during the Soviet secre- tary's visit were Moscow's Dyna- mo soccer team, weightlifter Leo- nid Zhabotinsky and track stars Chilean Leaders Deny Having Made Attacks on Jews Three Chilean presidential can- didates have denied anti-Israel and anti-Jewish statements attributed to them in an Arab monthly, "Na- cion Arabe," published in Buenos Aires. The January-February, 1964, issue of the Arab monthly, virulently anti-Israel, anti-Jewish and anti-Zionist, published alleged interviews with three candidates for the Chilean presidency: Sena- tor Salvador Allende, of the Frente Popular (Popular Front), Jorge Prat, of the Partido Accion Nacional (National Action Party), and Senator Eduardo Frei, of the Partido Democrata Cristiano (Christian Democratic Party). All three statements contained refer- ences offensive to Jews, to Zion- ists and to Israel. World Jewish Congress officials in Buenos Aires, together with leaders of the DAIA (Delegacion de Asociaciones Israelitas Argen- tinas), the Argentinian representa- tive Jewish body and affiliated with the World Jewish Congress, subsequently learned that none of the alleged statements had ever been made. This fact, as well as details of the denials, were given by the DAIA and the World Jew- ish Congress to the Argentinian Foreign Minister, Zavala Ortiz. The three interviews included a variety of pro-Arab propaganda statements in line with the gen- eral Arab League policy on Pales- tine. Valeri Brunel and Irina and Ta- mara Press. The Russian secretary indicat- ed he would transmit a report of his meeting with Dr. Atlasz to Moscow. Dr. Atlasz himself point- ed out that the official visit of a Russian representative to the office of the Maccabi World Union was a significant turn in the sports relationship between Israel and the USSR.
