250 U. S. Labor
Possony's 'Lenin' Reveals Stalin's
Intrigues Causing Trotsky's Removal
Leaders to Meet
FOREST PARK, Penn. (JTA)-
Over 250 labor leaders from all
parts of the United States met
here at a two-day conference on
the role of free labor in the eco-
nomic development of Israel,
sponsored by the American Trade
Union Council for Histadrut.
In a major conference address,
Dr. Leon Keyserling, former chair-
man of the President's Council of
Economic Advisors, stressed the
need for Israel to "show leader-
ship in social progress and in the
renaissance of moral responsi-
bility for people in need."
The world looks to Israel, he
said, "especially the underde-
veloped nations of Asia and
Africa which regard it as a friend.
Israel . basically can contribute
more to these countries than the
American Peace Corps because
Israel's emissaries represent an
entire society that is like the
countrie that re being helped."
Other speakers at the confer-
ence included Louis Stulberg,
general secretary treasurer of the
International Ladies' Garment
Workers Union; and Ben Zion
Ilan, representative of the Histad-
rut in Israel.
The role of Leon Trotsky in the
Russian revolutionary movement
is beginning to receive ever-in-
creasing attention.
In the newly-accumlating litera-
ture on the events that led to
the Communist domination over
Russia, new light is being shed
on the lives o Lenin, Stalin, the
many "martyrs" in the struggle
for power and the behind-the-
scenes development in Russia.
One of the major works just
released by Henry Regnery Co.
(114 W. Illinois, Chicago 10) is
"Lenin: The Compulsive Revolu-
tionary," in which Stefan T. Poss-
ony, author of important works
on the Communist programs and
tactics, describes the power
struggle.
It was a bitter battle, and
Stalin's intrigues, the removal of
Lenin's closest associates from
power, the brutal actions against
Trotsky and the other anti-
Stalinists who figured in the in-
ternal war, emerge as part of the
most thorough road ever pursued
towards totalitarianism.
So involved were the intrigues
that they led to an end to the
career of Trotsky who later was
able to . produce a testament
from Lenin preferring him as
his successor. There were sui-

tides, murders, sex involvements.
Advantage was shrewdly taken
by Stalin of Lenin's illness. The
Possony revelations contribute
towards solving many of the
riddles in the Russian puzzle,
and the current situation is bet-
ter understood as a result of
the exposes in this volume.
There is no doubt, from the data
accumulated, that Lenin "found
common ground with Trotsky."
But the Stalin clique had its way.
The personal antagonisms, the
love affairs, the foxy and shread
intriguing as outlined in Possony's
"Lenin" provide new interest in
the study of the USSR's current
status.
Another significant note on
Trotsky's role is incorporated in
"Marxism and Freedom: From 1776
Until Today," an impressive study
by Raya Dunayevskaya who wrote
from Detroit and whose book was
published by Twayne. This revised
new edition contains a new chap-
ter on "The Challenge of Mao Tse-
Tung."
Lenin is quoted here as having
asserted that Trotsky was "the
most able man" in the Communist
Central Committee, but that he
was attracted too much by purely
administrative affairs.
Dunayevskaya asserts: "Russia
has become an important indus-
trial land, a country that posseses
values. China is a vast underdevel-
oped land, whose main possession
is not the machine, but 650 mil-
lion human beings. It is precisely
this backwardness which pushed
China forward to pose—only to
pose but not to solve—its crisis in
hum-an terms."

Technion Scientists Study Israeli Plant Life
HAIFA
The possibility of
using compounds from certain
local plants for pharmaceutical
purposes is a subject of research
at the chemistry department of
the Technion, Israel Institute of
Technology. The research is be-
ing conducted under a two-year
grant from the Ford Foundation.
Technion scientists feel that be-
cause relatively little systematic
investigation of the chemical con-
tent of local plant life has been
undertaken, chemical knowledge
in this field has been rather
scarce. They also feel that Israel,
as a country which is not rich
in natural raw materials, should
not overlook any possibilities.
All of the plants studied under
—
the research program have been
or are still being used by various
sections of the population as reme-
dies for different kinds of ail-
ments. The work to date has been
carried out by Dr. A. Mandel-
baum.
The research is being executed
in two stages. The first calls for
the isolation and characterization
of the compounds found in the
plants. The second involves degra-
dation studies and the determina-
tion of the structures of previous-
ly unknown compounds which are
isolated. A possible third stage
would be the synthesis of more
interesting compounds isolated.
The research grant is admini-
stered by the Technion Research
and Development Foundation.
