Prize for physics in 1925. His stand-
ing was so high that when he re-
signed his professorship, his action
was attacked by Nazi scientists as
"sabotage" of the state.
When lie decided to leave Ger-
many, he had his gold Nobel
medal dissolved into powder,
which he brought to the United
States and had recast into a re-
production of the medal.
As a citizen of the United States,
Dr. Franck helped develop the
atomic bomb. He was physics
emeritus at the University of Chi-
cago and lectured at several other
universities.
The Pulitzer Prize which he
shared with Dr. Gustav Hertz, an-
other German, was awarded for
their work on the ionization poten-
tial of gases.
Dr. Franck was to have received
an honorary degree at Duke Uni-
versity next month. At the time of
his death, he was visiting Gottin-

Egyptian Speaks in Australia;
Menzies Plans Israel Visit
MELBOURNE (J T A) — Ali
Sabri, Egyptian President Nasser's
foreign adviser, arrived in Can-
berra on his 15-nation mission to
seek support for Arab opposition
to Israel's National Water Carrier
Project.
His appearance in Australia was
his fourth stop. He has already
visited Cambodia, Thailand and
Burma, and said that the Arab case
had been received "with percep-
tion" only by Cambodia and Burma.
He said he plans to present to
Australian Prime Minister Robert
Menzies the view that Israel's posi-
tion in the Middle East is an "ag-
gressive one," and that the Arab
countries have decided to thwart
Israel's plans to tap the Jordan
River by "diverting the headwa-
ters of the river."
Australian newspapers noted
that the prime minister has al-
ready indicated his views toward
Israel by scheduling a visit to Is-
rael on June 16, the first such trip
by an Australian prime minister.

Leading Catholic Paper
in Belgium Reports on
Plight of Soviet Jews
BRUSSELS (JTA)—Libre Bel-
gique, the most important Catholic
newspaper in Brussels, today pub-
lished a three-column, front-page
article reporting on the plight of
Jews in the USSR and Soviet anti-
Semitic policies. The article also
sharply denounced discrimination
against Jews as an ethnic group and
pointed to the signs of a "neo-
Judaism" of the young generation
which, the paper said, shows the
existence of a "new Jewish con-
science" stronger than persecutions
and vexations.
