USSR Synagogues
Filled to Capacity
During Shavuot

LONDON (JTA) — All syna-
gogues in Moscow and in Lenin-
grad were crowded beyond capac-
ity when Shavuot services were
conducted by the congregations,
according to reports received here
from the Soviet Union.
Not only the houses of worship
but the courtyards surrounding
the synagogues were filled with
many hundreds of Jews celebrating
the holiday, the reports noted.
Copies of the Soviet press re-
ceived here however, indicated
that the Soviet government is con-
tinuing its drive against alleged
economic offenders bearing names
that are obviously Jewish.
The Minsk daily : Sovietskaya
Byelorussia, reported the opening
of a trial against a man named
Boris Raikhlin, charged with steal-
ing watch parts from a factory and
selling them in Talin, capital of
Esthonia.
Trutt, the official organ of the
Soviet trade unions, reported a
case of another man, S. M. Mar-
gulies, accused of "pocketing about
100,000 rubles from salaries due to
workers" who had installed elec-
tric boilers on collective farms.
