Sculpture Depicts Israel's Heroism Coach Davidson in Israel to Raise Level of Basketball By JESSE and ROY SILVER (Copyright, 1964, JTA, Inc.) Monumental sculpture called "Together," created specially for the World's Fair, is now on exhibit at the American-Israel Pavilion. The massive structure, 22 feet high and 15 feet wide, shows six heroic figures straining to fit two huge water pipes. According to Z.Vi Gevra, the artist who created the sculpture, it is a symbol of Israel's stiriving to make the desert bloom. The pipes represent the conduit that is being constructed to carry the waters from the north to the arid Negev area in the south. Suspended eight feet above the ground, the sculpture dominates the section of the Pavilion devoted to vistas of modern Israel. Geyra, 37, is also responsible for the interior design of the pavilion. Davidson's trip is his second. Both were sponsored jointly by the U.S. Committee Sports for Israel and the U. S. State Department. The following is a special progress report from Davidson to this column: "I have found a decided im- provement in the youth (15-17- year-olds) and a continued interest on their part for basketball. This can be attributed to their interest in the national players and some better instruction by a few of the coaches at the lower level. "At present I am working with four groups of these boys (30 in each group) at four dif- ferent areas of the country, namely: Haifa, Tel Aviv, Jeru- salem and Rehovah in the South. After they complete their regu- lar seasons we are going to form a Little League and have them compete against each other. - "When the Bulgaria National team arrives we are going to have two of these boys' groups play the prelim game. "I am concentrating my efforts, per the request of the Sports for Israel Committee and Israel's Min- istry of Education, on the devel- opment of the coaches and teach- ers of physical education in the schools. We are going to cover the proper instruction of fundamen- tals through to game strategy in- cluding types and uses of different offenses and defenses, modern techniques, and proper training procedures with the emphasis put American Mutual Fund for Investments in Israel Offers Shares to Public NEW YORK, (JTA,—Shares in the Israel American Diversified Fund, Inc., a newly formed, open- end diversified investment com- pany, are now being offered to the public following registration with the Securities Exchange Commis- sion, it was announced by Lawr- ence G. The Friendship House will serve as the base of operations for the U.S. team. During the period be- tween Maccabiahs, it will provide inexpensive quarters for visiting pilgrims from around the world. Some weeks ago this column carried a story about the Jewish- ness of Tamara and Irina Press, Russian track and field Olympic stars in 1960. Abraham Green, one of Israel's three national track coaches, said he was told by Soviet coach Gabriel Korobkov that the Press sisters were not Jewish. Now, your correspondents have had an opportunity to talk to a second Israeli national coach, Mordchai Mogali, who is presently in the United States. This is what he told us: "During the Rome Olympics I spoke briefly to Tamara Press through an interpreter. I asked if she were Jewish. She asked if it was important. I said yes. She looked at me for a few seconds, smiled and then said, Pa.' Then she walked away." Union in New York. . . .
