Record of Greatness Among Traditional Magazine Reports on Christian Drive
Jews in Dr. Juno; s 'Men of the Spirit' to Wipe Out Traces of Anti-Semitism
erase

As editor of "The Jewish Libra-
ry," Dr. Leo Jung of New York
has made many important literary
contributions to traditional Jew-
ish literature. "The Jewish Libra-
ry" contains sev-
eral volumes
dealing with ma-
jor Jewish his-
1orical develop-
ments and with
essays on tradi-
tional laws a n d
customs. Three
of the volumes
form a biograph-
ical series, a n d
t h e newest —
the third in that
trio — now is-
sued by Kymson
Publishing C o .
(225 Varick St.,
NY 14) under
t h e title "Men
of the Spirit,"
Dr. Jung
contains a most impressive collec-
tion of articles about very great
Jewish personalities in 13 coun-
tries.
There are 91 chapters in this
book dealing with the lives of 86
Jews who, as Rabbi Jung describes
them. were "guardians of our heri-
tage and men of the spirit." In
addition, there are essays on rab-
binic ethics. freedom of interpre-
tation, rabbinic literature, and a
long introductory article, "A Biog-
raphy of the Rabbinic Spirit," by
Nima Adlerblum.
Dr. Jung prefaces the series
in this '740-page book by assert-
ing that Jewish history would
be meaningless if it lacked "ade-
quate recognition of the rabbis'
achievements," and he states
that there is no "typical rabbi,"
that rabbis differ in method and
attitude, that self-criticism has
been an ideal pattern.
Because the men presented in
this volume might be forgotten
within a generation, knowledge
about them is preserved here, and
Dr. Jung undertook to include
"every vital variety of rabbinic
leader, from patient saint to im-
patient pioneer, from the Tzaddik
in Eastern lands to the Gaon in
Central Europe . . .

9

While there is "an apparent
sameness of pattern in the biogra-
phies," Rabbi Jung points to some
that portray "traits of matchless
virtue," others who had unusual
optimism, the rigorousness of oth-
ers. And he points to Nathan Birn-
baum and Hillel Zeitlin who "had
come from the periphery of Jew-
ishness in undeviating quest for
its center, hence their records
have a poignant beauty of their
own."
Noted scholars participated in
providing material for this volume,
as co-authors and translators with
Dr. Jung. The list of biographers
is in itself outstanding, and the
personalities whose activities are
accounted for form a_ veritable
Traditional Who's Who.
There are, among the leaders
described, men who played vital
roles in establishing great Jewish
institutions. Some among them
were i n v o l v e d in controversies
which led to understanding of ma-
jor Jewish issues relating to law,
customs, education.

The scholarly introduction by
Nima Adlerblum is in itself a rich
gift towards the contents of this
encyclopedic work. This able writ-
er deals in her essay with women
in Israel, with the distaff side of
traditional leadership.
This scholarly essay romanticizes
beautifully. Miss Adlerblum ad-
monishes that our spirituality, our
main force, "is not abstract." She
speaks of romanticism as implying
not sensuousness or unreality "but
the vesting of our world with the
longing aspirations of the soul ...
Emphasis on beliefs, emotion, ro-
mance, does not rob reason of its
proper place in the Jewish per-
spective. There is no cleavage be-
tween them . . . The drive of the
collective Jewish spirit is the Jew-
ish being itself . . ."
The Israeli traditional leaders
in this collection include Rabbi
Wolf Gold (in an essay by his
brother, Dr. H. Raphael Gold),
Ze'ev 1VIeir Bar-Ilan (by Dr. Jos-
eph Litvin, London), Yitzhak Ze'ev
Soloveitchik, A b r a h a m Isaiah

Joseph Meyerhoff, of Baltimore,
general chairman of the UJA,
called upon the Jewish communi-
ties in the United States to mobi-
lize fullest support for the UJA's
$39,500,000 national cash drive.
The raising of this sum by June
