Bond Breakfast
Here's Menu
for Shavuot
The tenth anniversary of Herzl
Press will be celebrated with a
luncheon Wednesday, May 20, at
the Penthouse of the JeWiS h
Agency for Israel, 515 Park, New
York. Marking the anniversary,
Herzl Press will publish its 72nd
title, "Corning Home," a memoir by
Rahel Yanait Ben-Zvi, widow of
the second president of Israel Itz-
hak Ben-Zvi.
"Coming Home" deals with the
period in Palestine from 1908 to
1918, the date of the beginnings
of the British rule in Palestine.
Its pages include portraits of the
early Ben Gurion; Chaim Weiz-
mann returning from his desert
encounter with the Emir Feisal;
life under Turkish rule in Pales-
tine; and the beginnings of the
political underground that was to
eventually result in the founding
of the Jewish State in 1948.
Dr. Emanuel Neumann is chair-
man of the Herzl Foundation
which sponsors Herzl Press and
Dr. Raphael Patai is editor of
Herzl Press.

Paprika to garnish
In a 4-quart saucepan melt the butter
over medium heat, add the onion, and
cook until transparent but not browned.
Add the potatoes, carrots, water, and
salt, bring to a boil, then cook, covered,
until very tender. Press through a sieve
or food mill, or puree in a blender.
Return to the saucepan, and add the
milk or half-and-half, the soup mix, and
the pepper. Stir until very hot, but do
not boil. Taste, and add more salt and
pepper if needed. Serve the soup either
hot or chilled, with a sprinkle of pap-
rika as a garnish. This amount makes
about 6 and 34 cups of soup. Use the
half-and-half if an extra-rich puree is
desired.

GEFILTE FISH LOAF
2 lbs. filleted mixed fish
1 large onion, peeled
1/2 cup blanched almonds
1 tablespoon very soft butter
2 tablespoons matzo meal
2 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon salt
Vg teaspoon black pepper
2 eggs
1/2 cup water
Select a mixture of fat and lean fish,
such as pike, whitefish, trout or
carp. Remove the skin as well as the
bones, and have the fish weighed after
it is filleted. Put the fish, onion and
almonds through a food grinder twice,
using the medium blade. Work in the
butter. Add the matzo meal, sugar, salt,
pepper and eggs and beat until thorough-
ly blended. Gradually stir in the water.
Grease a 9x5x3 inch loaf pan well, and
coat it evenly with additional matzo
meal. Pour in the fish mixture, and
bake at 350 dogs. F. about one hour
and a quarter, until firm and lightly
browned. If the loaf is filled to the
top, place a shallow pan underneath, as
a little of the liquid may cook over.
Unmold and serve either hot or chilled,
cut into 10 slices. As a man dish, allow
two slices for each portion.

CHEESE STUFFED PEPPERS
4 large green peppers
2 slices white bread, diced
1 /4 cup milk
1 /4 cup finely minced onion
3 tablespoons butter
2 eggs
1 lb. creamed cottage cheese
1 tablespoon minced parsley
1 teaspoon salt
1 /4 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 cup thoroughly drained canned
tomato, cut small
Dairy sour cream
Cut the peppers in half lengthwise,
remove all the seeds, the stem and the
white membranes. Put the shells into
boiling water and boil hard for one
minute. Drain at once and cool. In a
mixing bowl soak the bread in the
milk until soft, then mash it smooth.
Cook the onion in 2 tablespoons of the
butter until soft but not brown. Add
to the bread. Add the eggs and beat
until blended. Press the cheese through
a sieve into the bread mixture, then
add the parsley, salt, pepper and tomato
Beat until thoroughly blended and fill
the pepper shells with the mixture. In
a shallow greased baking dish place the
shells side by side and close together.
Dot the surface of the filling with the
remaining butter. Carefully pour water
into the bottom of the dish to the depth
of 1/4 inch. Do not let the water touch
the surface of the pepper filling. Bake
at 350 dogs. F. for 50 minutes, or at 325
degs. F. for one hour. Serve hot with
dairy sour cream. Allow one or two pep-
per halves for each serving.
The filling is a pretty pink and rather
soft and creamy under a delicate crust.
This dish is also prepared with the
canned tomato omitted. Instead of the
sour cream, a tomato sauce is served
with it.
