novelist and essayist, died May 1
at age 66.
Born in Russia, he came to the
United States in 1911 and received
a degree in pharmacy from Ford-
ham University in 1923. However,
he never practiced that profession,
joining the staff of the Jewish
Morning Journal in 1924.
He was the author of eight
volumes of poetry, some of his
verses having been translated into
Hebrew, French and Russian. In
recent years, he was on the staff
of the Joint Distribution Commit-

Mrs. Bessie Cohen Dies;
Was on UHS Board
Mrs. Bessie Cohen, lifelong
resident of Detroit and a board
member of the United Hebrew
Schools, died Sunday at age 72.
Mrs. Cohen was a member of
Cong. Shaarey Zedek and its sister-
hood for 50 years. She also was
active in the Jewish Children's
Home, Hadassah and was a past
matron of Purity Chapter, Order
of the Eastern Star.
Mrs. Cohen, 18501 Wildemere, is
survived by her husband, Herman;
a son, Cyril Crane; a daughter,
Mrs. Roy (Annette) Paul; a bro-
