Young Israeli Prize Winner Bowed in Detroit

By NATHAN ZIPRIN ,
When Itzhak Perlman, 18-year-
old Israel violinist, won first place
in the Leventritt International
Competition at Carnegie Hall in
New York, the American - Israel
Cultural Foundation added a new
name to its roster of prize-win-
ning scholarship students. Itzhak,
a protege of the Foundation since
he was 11 years old, is one of the
many youthful Israelis who have
studied under the Foundation's
scholarship program, which an-
nually grants some 150 scholarships
in all the arts.
He was presented in his first
concert in this country in De-
troit by the Music Study Club.
Other Foundation scholarship
students who have won major
awards recently are Shmuel Ash-
kenazi, violinist, who won second
place in the Tchaikovsky competi-
tion in Moscow, and Moshe Atz-
mon, conductor, who took second
prize in the International Mitro-
poulos competition in New York.
Itzhak, a handsome, curly-haired
youth, was the youngest contestant

in the Leventritt competition this
year and the third 18-year-old in
the history of the competition to
win the award. His victory put him
in the company of such former
winners as Van Cliburn, Gary
Graffman, John Browning, Eugene
Istomin and Malcom Frager. The
Leventritt award includes a $1,000
grant and guaranteed appearances
with some of the nation's most im-

In 1956, when he was 10, Itzhak
