Campaign _Passes tiw $4 Million
Mark; Well on Way to Goat

"The pledges have topped $4 1
million," Chairman Charles H.
Gershenson reported at a workers'
rally that honored the 14 local
Jewish Welfare Federation agen-
cies, and he predicted, "We are
well on the way to success in the
1964 Allied Jewish Campaign."
Gershenson and . Abraham Bor-
man, co-chairman of the drive,
stated:
"In our efforts to raise funds
for the homeless Jew who is a
refugee and the newly arrived im-
migrant to Israel, we must not lose
sight of the fact that we also bene-
fit our brethren in need here in
Detroit," they pointed out.
Those attending the meeting rep-
resent the Community Workshop,
Fresh Air Society, Hebrew Free
Loan Association, House of Shel-
ter, Jewish Community Center,
Jewish Community Council, Jewish
Family and Children's Service-
Bellefaire, Jewish Home for Aged,
Jewish Vocational Service, Mid-
rasha, Resettlement Service, Sinai
Hospital and Shiffman Clinic, Tam-
arack Hills Authority and the Unit-
ed Hebrew Schools and their af-
filiated schools.
At a previous report meeting.
Samuel Haber, assistant European
director of the Joint Distribution
Committee, told campaign leaders
that their efforts to raise funds
were "vital" if Jewish refugees
were to be saved and helped to
adjust to their new environment.
"The Jewish population of France
has soared from 350,000 to more
than 500,000 persons. They must
be fed, housed, clothed and helped
to either establish themselves in
France or emmigrate to Israel or
other lands of freedom throughout
the world.
"The strain on our resources,"
he said, "is considerable. But we
must help everyone who needs suc-
cor and assistance. To do less
would be to deny our 5,000 year
old heritage and is unthinkable."
Noting that the Campaign is
within a few weeks of its official
closing date of May 13, Gershen-
son commended the mechanical

ti

trades, arts and crafts, professional
and services divisions in the trades
and professions, and the Women's
Division, for pacing the fund-rais-
ing effort.
Many sections, Gershenson stated,

Mercantile Division
Sets Higher Record
in Allied Campaign

When it comes to stores and
what they sell, there is no greater
variety than those run by the
members of the mercantile divi-
sion of the Allied Jewish Cam-
paign.
The mercantile division, whose
chairman this year is Marvin G.
Alexander of Davidson Brothers,
has so far raised
more than $350,-
000 in its drive
to assist the
homeless refugee
and the new im-
migrant to Israel.
Peter D. Brown
is co-chairman of
this division.
T h e leading
section in total
M. G. Alexander amount raised
both this year and last is women's
wear department stores, headed by
Ernest J. Schwartz and Fred Win-
kelman. To date, the section has
raised more than $100,000, nearing
last year's total of 5123,460.
In second place this year with
more than $75,000 pledged, or in
excess of 75 per cent of last year.

this effort are Nate Goldman,
chairman, Herman Frumin, Earl
Weingarden and Al Sklar.

are already over the 100% mark
in their efforts to bring much need-
ed help to Jews in need not only
overseas but also here in Detroit
and the United States as well.
"The campaign total is steadily
moving upward," he said, "toward
our goal of surpassing last year's
achievement. Although the total
has passed the 90% mark, we must
not stop until we go over the top
in this combined fund-raising to
help the Jew in need around the
corner as well as around the
world."
Gershenson predicted that the
final days of the drive will bring
in a rush of pledges from those
who identify with Jewish values
and causes everywhere in the
world and want to give once-for-
all to help the 55 agencies bene-
fiting from the campaign.
The next report meeting will be
a luncheon Friday, May 8, in the
Butzel Bldg. auditorium, 163 Madi-
son, to honor the leading sections
and divisions.
The victory dinner of the cam-
paign will be held Wednesday, May
13, in the Jewish Center.
