New York City Commission Will Investigate
Negro Attack on Yeshiva Pupils, Teachers
NEW YORK (JTA)—The New
York City Commission on Human
Rights has started an investigation
of the attack by 50 Negro teen-
agers last week on pupils and
teachers of a yeshiva in the Bed-
ford-Stuyvesant slum section of
Brooklyn.
The disclosure followed a de-
mand by the Jewish Community
Council (JCC) of Brooklyn, sent
to Mayor Wagner and Police Com-
missioner Michael Murphy, ask-
ing for immediate action to pre-
vent future attacks by "Negro

N.J. Synagogue Youths
Tutor Negro Students
NEWARK, N.J., (JTA) — A
group of Reform synagogue youth
members have been tutoring 20
Negro boys and girls in elementary
and high school subjects at the
synagogue as a "meaningful ap-
plication of the teachings of Ju-
daism," it was reported by Rabbi
Barry H. Greene, associate rabbi
of Cong. Bnai Jeshurun.
Each Saturday morning, the.
Negro children, attending the 4th
to 12th grades in public schools,
use the classrooms of the syna-
gogue. The tutors, who are 15 to
18 years old, teach the Negro chil-
dren arithmetic, spelling, physics,
Latin, English, geography, history,
algebra and reading. Rabbi Greene
said the success of the program had
led the New Jersey region of the
National Federation of Temple
Youth to start similar programs in
other parts of New Jersey.
ruffians" on pupils at the United
Lubavitcher Yeshivoth.
The Brooklyn Council, which
represents more than 800 Brooklyn
Jewish organizations, told the
mayor and the police commissioner
that "the wanton attack has dis-
turbed and outraged the entire
Brooklyn Jewish community."
Ten Negro youths arrested in
the attack were released with a
lecture by a family court judge
after yeshiva officials dropped
charges against them.
Some 16 of the pupils and two
teachers of the United Lubavitcher
Yeshivoth were roughed up and
bruised in the attack during a
lunch-hour recess. One youth, who
was seized in a citizen's arrest by
a city building inspector, was sen-
tenced last week to an 18-month
term in a state training school.
Rabbi Samuel Schrage, principal
of the school, said yeshiva officials
had decided that prosecution of
the 10 youths would not serve any
purpose since they and their par-
ents had expressed contrition for
taking part in the assault. Judge
Maurice Bernhardt then dismissed
the charges.
Former Justice Emil N. Barr,
acting JCC president, said the or-
ganization also had sent communi-
cations to leaders of the Congress
of Racial Equality, the National
Association for the Advancement
of Colored People and the Urban
League. Judge Barr expressed
"dismay that no public statement
has been forthcoming from the
heads of these groups." He said
officials of the three groups had
been informed of the JCC's "out-
rage and shock at the ruthless
attack of Negro boys upon the
Jewish students."

Asked to Assist
France's Refugees
PARIS (JTA)—An urgent ap-
peal to the Jewries of France, the
United States, Canada and Britain
to increase substantially their con-
tributions to help North African
refugee settlers in France to
achieve normal lives was made
here at the opening assembly of
the Central French Jewish Fund
by its president, Baron Guy de
Rothschild.
The assembly of the Fund was
still dominated by the problems of
the heavy immigration from
North Africa which almost over-
night made French Jewry the
largest Jewish community in Eu-
rope.
Baron Rothschild reported that
the Fund had set a budget of 8
million francs ($1.6 million) for
North African Jewish resettlement
projects. He said that 3 million
francs ($600,000) had been raised
by French Jewry, and the rest was
contributed by the American Joint
Distribution Committee.
He reported that the 200,000
Jewish newcomers had not only
made French Jewry the largest
community in Europe but that
they had also influenced it in
the direction of becoming a co-
herent body. He said: "Now we
are becoming a real, unified
community. We have the quan-
titative potential, the adhesion
of all members, and the desire
of the leaders to become such
a unified community."
He stressed, however, that
French Jewry still faced many
problems and appealed to all of
its members and to other com-
munities to help. He said the goals
of integrating the newcomers and
assuring their full participation in
Jewish life could be achieved if
efforts were concentrated on both
the cultural and social fields.
