With this observation on "minority ethics," Dr. Abraham Kaplan brought out another in his list of "Values and Commitments for Our Day" at the Midrasha In- stitute Wednesday. Dr. Kaplan, professor of philos- ophy at the University of Michi- gan, pointed out that Jews "come naturally by certain social ideals of equality. Our God constantly identifies Himself as the God who brought us out of the land of Egypt, . . . who freed us from bondage." By way of analogy, he added, "When two 'Yids' (Jews, - or the Hebrew letter yod) are side by side, they spell God." But there is no word, no godliness, "when one 'Yid' is over the other." Dr. Kaplan also commented that "integration which shares basic rights and opportunities" has his support, but he de- nounced integration that would "melt us all down into a com- mon culture which lacks char- acter because of its commonal- ity."
