ROME — Italian Foreign
Minister Giuseppe Sarragat was
reported here Tuesday to have
vigorously defended Israel in
talks with Vice Premier Fawzi
of Egypt during a visit to Cairo.

Vittorio Groesio, a La Stampa
staff member who accompanied
the foreign minister, described
the discussions in which Sarra-
gat told the Egyptian vice prem-
ier that "Israel is a reality
which it would be absurd to
deny" and that Israel "cannot
be identified with a presumed
aggressive Zionism but a sym-

bol of the persecution suffered
by the Jews."
The foreign minister also
was reported as telling Fawzi
that "admittedly the Arabs
did not commit that crime
and therefore they do not
have to pay for it, but they
should not impede" efforts to
achieve a settlement of the
Israel Arab problemit He
added that there was a need
to find a prompt solution to
the Arab refugee problem and
that the best place to do that
was in the United Nations.
The correspondent stressed
that Fawzi, after saying that the

Parcels to Prisoners in Syria Sent
Back to Israel; 'Address Unknown'

(Direct JTA Teletype Wire

TEL AVIV — Five parcels
parcels sent through the inter-
national Red Cross to five Is-
raelis known to be held pris-
oners in Syrian jails were re-
turned Tuesday to Israel by
the Red Cross with a note that
Syrian officials said they had
no knowledge about the per-
sons to whom the parcels were
addressed.
The parcels contained cloth-
ing and food sent by the Com-
mittee for the Release of Pris-
oners in Syria which was
formed after the Syrians re-
leased last year 11 Israelis who
had been held for years in
Syrian jails.
The condition of the re-
turnees evoked a storm of pro-
test in Israel against Syrian
brutality. It was learned at that
time that a number of long-
missing Israelis were being held
under inhuman conditions in
Syrian jails.

3 Hanged in Syria

estant lay preacher and two
Syrians convicted of spying for
Israel were publicly hanged in
Damascus, it was reported here.

Arab position on the issues was
known, seemed to agree and
did not repeat the usual formula
of the Arab extremists that the
only solution was to drive the
Jews into the sea.
The correspondent also re-
ported that the foreign minis-
ter's straight-forward attitude
and statements on this and
other questions made a deep
impression on his Egyptian
hosts. The Sarragat statements
as reported here were com-
mented on very favorably by
the Italian press.
