Sinai Radiology Dept. Develops New Efficient Method Boris Smolar's 'Between You 1 ... and Me (Copyright, 1964, Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Inc.) Soviet Echoes: The more light is thrown on the notorious Soviet anti-Semitic book, "Judaism Without Embellishment," the uglier are the facts that emerge . . . A copy of the book now before me shows that this outrageous piece of anti-Jewish propaganda is the work not of one person but of a group of Soviet intellectuals and high Communist officials in the Ukraine . . . In other words, it is the crime not of one person but is actually a "collective crime," as the Soviet press would call it in its jargon, if the guilty are ever put on trial before a Soviet court . . . The blame for this vicious book, published by the Academy of Science of Soviet Ukraine, is put naturally on its author, Trofim Kichko . . . However, when one who can read the Ukrainian language — the book is published in Ukrainian — sees the printed volume, he cannot help but notice the credit which a number of others take for the book, proudly having their names displayed on the inside of the cover page . . . Credit for editing this anti-Jewish piece of "literature" is given to editor V. S. Tchumachenko . . . The Nazi-like anti- Jewish cartoons, done in the style of the notorious Nazi publica- tion "Der Stuermer," are credited the "art editor," V. M. Teplia- kov, and to the "art technician," M. 0. Savcheno . . . Two more names appear on the page to whom credit is given, and two other names — one of a Soviet professor, and the other of a Soviet writer — appear under a four-page introduction to the book, endorsing its contents and lauding it . . . The joint introduction, signed by A. Vedenski, a professor of history, and by "writer" Grigori Plotkin, is as anti-Semitic as the book itself and full of shameless falsehoods and high-powered anti-Jewish incitement . .. The most startling discovery on the book's inside cover page is the official announcement that the manuscript has been "endorsed for publication" by the Soviet authorities . . . Even the date of that written endorsement is given — Oct. 12, 1963. A more efficient method of preparing hospital patients for barium enema X-ray examina- tion that has resulted in an annual savings to Sinai Hospital of Detroit of $10,500, has been entered in the 1964 6th Search for New Hospital Achievements Contest conducted by the Mich- igan Hospital Association. The new procedure, submit- ted by Dr. Howard H. Feigelson, director of Sinai's department of radiology, is a more efficient way of preparing patients for barium enema examination and since it was instituted in the hospital in 1960 has realized its savings through a sharp drop in the number of patients that had to be re-examined. Prior to the use of the new techniques de- veloped by Dr. Feigelson, over 20 per cent of all barium enema examinations had to be repeated because of poor preparation. Since the institution of the new preparation methods, the repeat examinations has been dropped to 8 per cent. Dr. Feigelson's entry will compete in the annual contest savings in excess of $251,000." to discover methods of curtail- The annual searches are co- ing rising operating costs for sponsored by Michigan Blue use by all Michigan hospitals. Allan Barth, of Lansing, executive director of the Mich- igan Hospital Association, ob- served that entries in the five previous contests produced sav- ings of over $5 million to participating hospitals. "T h i s figure," Barth noted, "is only a fraction of the total savings realized, since all entries sub- mitted are published and shared with hospitals throughout the state. Suppressed Desires: A collective trial of all those involved in planning and publishing such a violently anti-Jewish book as "Judaism Without Embellishment" would definitely bring out the fact that the book is actually an expression of the hatred which many Ukrainian intellectuals feel toward Moscow, even though they pose as Communists . . . They cannot come out with inciting propaganda against Moscow, so they release their stored up hatred by pub- lishing propaganda against the Jews, although Jews play no significant role now in the Soviet machinery . . . They cannot speak openly against the Communist Party, so they speak in the book against the Jews in the Communist Party . . . The book alleges that the Jews have, after the Communist Revolution, formed a Jewish section of the Communist Party "in order to be able to actively spread propaganda among Jews for the ideology of Zionism and Judaism under the camouflage of wide legal possibilities" . . . The fact that the book is published in the Ukrainian language — which no Russian and very few Jews can read and understand — shows that the book, was intended as inciting propaganda among Ukrainians, rather than to tell Jews that their religion is no good . . . If the book were intended for anti-religious propaganda it would have been published in Yiddish, since Ukrainians are not practicing the Jewish religion anyway . . . In this connection, it is remarkable how the general press in the United States has mistakenly created the impression that the book was withdrawn from sale in the Moscow book stores .. . The book was probably never on sale in Moscow, since Russians cannot read the Ukrainian language . . . The question is: was the book withdrawn from sale in the Ukraine? . . . And this is so far not the case . . . It is no secret that Soviet Premier Khrushchev has always tried to appease the nationalistic feelings of the Ukrainians, but only a statement from him condemning the book can prevent further vitriolic anti-Jewish propaganda in the Ukraine . . . A statement from him plus a public trial of those in the Ukraine who have gone as far as publishing deliberately the book "Judaism Without Embellishment" over which even Commuists parties in numerous lands are furious. Ritholz, Chicago millionaire imprisoned after his conviction of trying to bribe the State Board of Optometry in 1956, hopes to win his freedom on the basis of an alleged anti- Semitic remark. The remark, which was quoted by Rev. Marshall Rectory when he thought he was on his death- bed three months ago, was linked to a member of the Optometry Board. The Ritholz plea claims Chauncey Howe, board mem- ber, said: "The — Jew thought he could trap us, but we trapped him instead." Ritholz' attorneys argued to Gov. Romney at a public hear- ing that the remark related by Rev. Rector shows entrapment of Ritholz and justifies his re- lease at once from Jackson State Prison. The clergyman, thinking he was dying, told the story to Rabbi Leon Swartz, Jewish chaplain at J a c k s on State Prison, and it came to the at- tention of a state parole board investigator. Gov. Romney said he would have the matter investigated.
