Zionist leader, an author of
note and a distinguished educa-
tor. She is an associate of Golda
Meir and her friend of long
duration. Her newest book,
"Golda Meir:
Woman With
a Cause," pub-
lished by G.
Putnam's Sons
(200 Madison,
N Y 1 6), i s,
therefore, a n
authoritative
work. By vir-
t u e of the
Golda Meir
author's long a ss o c ia ti on
with the subject of her bio-
graphy, it is understandable
why it is so complimentary.
Indeed, Miss Syrkin's bio-
graphy of Israel's Foreign Min-
ister is a panegyric to a friend.
The accumulation of data re-
garding the Israeli leader's con-
tributions to Zionism, to the
labor movement and to the
State of Israel, prove convinc-
ingly that the encomia are well
earned.
So many accounts are given
of Mrs. Meir's life as an immi-
grant girl in Milwaukee, as a
roomer with her sister in Den-
ver, as a school teacher, as a
Zionist propagandist, her even-
tual rise to leadership of a new
nation, that the reader will be
entranced by her emergence to
world fame.

struggles with her associates
in the Mapai and the Hista-
drut, her earliest opposition
to other Zionist parties, and
various other personal exper-
iences, that are not in evi-
dence in an otherwise excel-
lently compiled biography.
On the whole the new Put-
nam-published work is a wel-
come addition to the personality
sketches that reveal the genius
of Israeli leadership.
There is a measure of hero
worship in Miss Syrkin's story.
She portrays the eloquence of
Mrs. Meir, at the United Na-
tions, before Histadrut gather-
ings, as a fund-raiser for Israel
Bonds and the United Jewish
Appeal as well as her party's
needs.
Her role in Israel is delineat-
ed with admiration, and every
detail of Mrs. Meir's public life
is described in a story that be-
gins with her arrival, as Goldie
Mabovitch, from Kiev, Russia,
to her present status as one of
the world's notable leaders in
statesmanship.
Mrs. Meir's struggles to
gain an education in this coun-
try, her determined will, her
Zionist idealism, form an ex-
cellent biographical beginning
in the description of her
early years in Palestine, her
struggles in the Zionist move-
ment, her efforts in behalf of
Aliyah. While Miss Syrkin

can Jewish immigration to
Israel, — she emphasizes the
need for a "motor power of a
dedicated Zionist movement"
in America—the Meir view-
point needs to be known and
is stated in this biography.
Mrs. Meir's association with
many Zionist leaders and es-
pecially h e r friendship for
David Ben-Gurion are in evi-
dence in the descriptions in the
Syrkin biography. Her assist-
ance in settling refugees and in
rescuing victims of Nazism, her
condemnation o f persecutors
and her defense of Jewish rights

Miss Syrkin's biography is
not only a tribute to a great
lady: it is a fine addition to
Zionist literature and to the
story of the builders of labor
Zionism on a worldwide scale
and of the State of Israel.
