A CALL TO CONSCIENCE

Friday, April 3, 1964

by the Rabbis of Greater Detroit

To the question, "Are we our brother's' keeper?" the answer must be an emphatic "yes." In a world
often darkened by inhumanity and indifference, the effort represented by the Allied Jewish Campaign is a
beacon of light which brings us into kinship with Jews everywhere who are in need.

The Allied Jewish Campaign is a source of strength for many causes sacred to all of us. It provides
the means to save the lives of countless numbers of our brethren in many parts of the world. It provides
hope and a future to other tens . of thousands in Israel and other countries where the uprooted of our people
are resettled. In our own community, it helps provide vital health, welfare., and Social service facilities for
the young and old, the sick and the infirm, the troubled and the needy. Whelps support educational insti-
tutions which guide our children in the faith of our fathers and their fathers before them.

The Allied Jewish Campaign has given vivid expression to the basic principle of "ha Yisroel arevim
zeh lozeh;" that all Jews form a fellowship of mutual responsibility.

Therefore, we, the religious leaders of our respective congregations, representing the Jewish religious
leadership of the Detroit area, call upon each of our fellow-Jews to do his share, to give generously of his
substance and time to this great effort, and to do so to the very limits of his capacity.
