Are Bountiful Buffet Nights 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. By DANNY RASKIN ONE THING most people of the theatrical and television worlds, regardless of their na- tionality, have in common is a fondness for a late-evening snack at a friendly and unpre- tentious delicatessen . . . An omelette wih knockwurst before retiring may not be just the thing for the digestion, and pastrami and dill pickles un- doubtedly cause some pretty weird dreams in the small hours of the night, but, to a perform- er who has been giving his all before the footlights, they seem to be as soothing as mother's lullaby . . . Bill Paley, head man at C.B.S., often spurns the superlative restaurant of the Ritz in Paris in favor of a deli- catessen he's discovered not a hundred steps from the Place Vendome . . . Jack Benny, in London, hails' as his proudest discovery a side-street restau- rant that features blintzes and cheese cake that would make "even Mr. Lindy's mouth water." . . . Lindy's itself, a New York institution, is equal- ly famed for its wonderful food and its star-spangled clientele Here it was, too, that Jack Pearl (Vas you dere, Sharlie?) played a reprehensible trick on the management . . . He bought a whole pound of prime corned beef at a butcher shop, and had it concealed on his person when he ordered a corned beef sand- wich at Lindy's . . . When his sandwich was put before him, he took one bite, then surrepti- tiously inserted the extra beef he had bought previously . . Summoning the headwaiter, he inquired blandly, "How can you afford to put so much fine beef in a single sandwich?" . . . The headwaiter took one look at the overstuffed sandwich, did a bit of rapid mental calculating on the net cost of the meat there- in, and headed for the kitchen with murder in his eyes. BERNIE LITT, bossman at Billy's Delicatessen on Liver- nois, is credited with inventing the Corned Beef Burger, which is just as the name suggests, grilled and served on a sesame seed bun with lettuce and Rus- sion Dressing. EVER HEAR OF a drink called, "Don't Go Near The Water?" . . . Here's how to make it . . . Ingredients are: 1/2 Brandy, 1/6 Curacao, 1/6 Marschino and 1/6 Lemon Juice . . . Shake well with ice and strain into glass frosted with sugar . . Serve with twist of lemon peel. NAMES TO HEAD this col- umn still come in and the judges are going to have a hard time making their choice . . . Latest ones are . . . "WHAT'S COOKING" by Lea Aronson, 20221 Prevost . . "ITS LIKE THIS" by Mrs. Wm. Olson, 15788 Steel . . . "AZOY GATE ESS!" by H. Gross, 23475 Cool- idge, Oak Park . . . "CHATTER PLATTER" by Sophie Green- blatt, 15395- Linwood . . . Those previously submitted are "GO- ING PLACES", "DOING THE TOWN", "DINING OUT" and "WHAT WE SAY" . • . Keep sending in your suggestions. Take your vacation now.
