NEW YORK (JTA) — The
Jewish Education Committee
warned the New York City
Board of Education that one of
the board's plans for integration
of public schools "poses a grave
threat to the survival of our
system of Jewish religious edu-
cation."
The warning was contained in
a letter to the board signed by
Jules L. Freed, president, and
Dr. Azriel Eisenberg, executive
vice president, of the JEC. The
plan to which the JEC referred
involves board of education in-
tentions to pair schools in mar-
ginal ethnic and racial neigh-
borhoods which would involve
bussing the affected children to
the paired schools.
The JEC explained that a
large proportion of Jewish chil-
dren of grade school age and a
growing number of children in
junior and senior public high
schools were receiving their re-
ligious education in afternoon
Jewish schools three to four
days a week.
In this way, the JEC said,
the children devoted the larg-
est portion of their free time
during daylight hours on
week-days to instruction in
the principles, traditions and
classic materials of Judaism
and thus "fortify and supple-
ment the spiritual and moral

The Council added that furth-

ed by academic standards now
being studied for authorization.
As to the three degrees not rec-
ognized in the order, the hold-

"Lenten reflection," Cardinal
Cushing declared, "makes us
realize again that Christ was
born a Jew. Mary and Joseph
were Jews. Christ worshipped
in the synagogue. His disciples
were Jews. He said Jewish
prayers. He observed the Jew-
ish Holy Days. He revered the
books sacred to the Jew and to
us. The Golden Rule that Christ
preached was taught in the
temple.

"The 'Lord's Prayer' that
Christ gave his disciples is al-
most identical with the sacred
Kaddish that begins: 'Extoll.
ed and hallowed be the name
of God. May His Kingdom
come and His will be done in
all the earth.'
"Christians must remember
when Jews do not accept Christ
as the Promised One, they do
not reject the ideals that Jesus
preached: humility, j u s t i c e,
mercy, brotherhood, love. The
spiritual ancestry of Christians
is Jewish. The Cross is a point of
separation in our spiritual tra-
ditions, but we must all be keen-
ly aware of the essential Chris-
tian doctrine: Christ died for
the sins of all men, those prior

to His time, His contemporaries,
those who came after him.
"Anti-Semitism is a profound-
ly unChristian attitude. The
only answer the Christian can
give to the question, 'Who put
Christ to death?' is: 'I did, as
often as I have committed a
serious sin."

Egyptian AF Captain
Defected to Israel as
Protest to Cairo Action

TEL AVIV, (JTA) — Capt.
Mahmoud Hilmi, the Egyptian
Air Force pilot who startled both
Israel and the Arab world last
January by defecting to Israel
in his plane, told a press con-
ference that he did so because
he opposed Egypt's participation
in the Yeman civil war.
Asked why he chose Israel, he
replied: "I had two possibilities,
an Arab country or Israel. The
Arab countries are unstable;
therefore, I chose Israel."
