passed almost without notice.

torate at the University of
Berne, and supplementing his
knowledge with a stretch of
scholarly research in Berlin, he
migrated to Palestine in 1928.
After over 20 years of teaching
at the famous Reali School in
Haifa, he was appointed profes-
sor of Bible at the Hebrew Uni-
versity. There he raised a gen-
eration of Israeli Bible scholars
who have now taken his place
at the University, from which
he retired a few years ago.
Men who are becoming
known as the world's leading
authorities on the biblical
world, Yadin, Haran, Malamat,
Tadmor, and many many others,
owe much of their outlook and
intellectual grounding to Yehez-
kel Kaufmann. In 1960, on the
occasion of Kaufmann's 70th
birthday, these young scholars
dedicated to their master the
Yehezkel Kaufmann Jubilee
Volume, a collection of essays
on the religious and literary
heritage of our people, subjects
to which Kaufmann decidated
his life.
Dr. H. L. Ginsberg, Profes-
sor of Bible at the Jewish Theo-
logical Seminary, himself a
leading expert on matters bib-
lical, acknowledges a great
debt to Kaufmann, as do count-
less other American Jewish
academicians.
To date, Kaufmann's in-

However, this is being slowly
overcome by the slow pene-
tration of the 1960 abridge-
ment of his magnum opus,
"The Religion of Israel," in
the brilliant translation and
re-working of Dr. Moshe
Greenberg, professor of Bible
at the University of Pennsyl-
vania.
On Nov. 10, the Teachers In-
stitute of the Jewish Theologi-
cal Seminary held a sheloshim
memorial service for Professor
Kaufmann, at which Prof. H. L.
Ginsberg spoke. The speaker
attributed to Kaufmann (speak-
ing in Hebrew, naturally, this
in itself a tribute to Kaufmann
who wrote in Hebrew), three
crowns — the crown of the
ideologist of Zionism, the crown
of the philosophical historian,
and the crown of biblical scho-
lar. In Kaufmann's early work,
"Gola Venekhar" ("In Exile
and Alien Lands"), discussing
the vast panorama of Jewish
existence, he claims that it was
the religion of Judaism which
kept our people alive and vib-
rant through its history in
lands not its own. He argues,
too, that a return to Zion is
the sine qua non for a modern
Jewish renaissance.
While this book will remain
dear to the hearts of the Jewish
people, his work on the history
of the literature and religious
ideas of the Bible (the third
"crown") must inevitably re-
main his greatest contribution
to the world at large. William
F. Albright, dean of American
archeologists and Bible experts,
wrote in 1960 that "Biblical
scholars of the West are just
becoming aware of Kaufmann's
great synthesis of the religious
history of the Old Testament
. . . (His work) will come to
many as a revelation. It should
be in the hands of every serious
student of the Bible."
Kaufmann's system is impor-
tant because it created a re-
placement for the extremely
hyper-critical school of German
scholar Julius W ellhaus en
(1844-1917). Wellhausen and
his large school of followers
contended that the Torah was
not written in the time of
Moses, but a thousand years
later, after the prophets Amos
and Isaiah created ethical mon-
otheism. To them, it was a long
evolutionary process that cul-
minated in the 8th and 7th
centuries which brought the
idea of one universal God to
the fore. Kaufmann, not a fun-
damentalist by any means, ac-
cepted the method of critical
analysis developed by the Ger-
man higher critics, but using
their methodology, defeated
them at their own game.
He proved that most of the
Torah was written in the very
early centuries of the first mil-
lenium, and that 8th and 7th
century prophets were influenc-
ed by much of the already-exist-
ing Pentateuchal literature. He
also showed that the idea of
one God was accepted by the
whole Israelite people from its
v e r y inception. Kaufmann's
ideas are highly important be-
cause he created them as an
objective scholar, and not as a
Jewish apologist.
