Valeria Beruriah Fascinating Story of a Second Century Jewish Portia

Valeria Beruriah was one of
the most remarkable women in
early Jewish history and litera-

tare. She lived in the Second
Century and excelled in knowl-
edge and wisdom.
For the greater part of her
life she lived in Tiberias. Pales-
tine. She was the daughter of
the saintly Hananiah ben Tera-
dion, who died a martyr because
of his unswerving devotion to
the Torah, and the wife of the
famous Rabbi Meir, who had
to flee from religious persecu-
tion.
Beruriah was a great scholar
in her own right, having ac-
quired an immense store of
learning. The great Rabbi
Johanan stated admiringly that
she had mastered 300 laws daily
for a period of years.
Once Beruriah dared to dif-
fer with her great father in
the version of a law Rabbi ben
Babba preferred her version to
that of her father.
Once, when her husband was
greatly perturbed because some

Beruriah's life was full of
great sorrows and bitter hard-
ships made bearable only by
her great love and devotion to
her husband. Her mother met
with violent death and a sister ,
was carried off to a house of
prostitution. Her husband suc-
ceeded in freeing her from
the house of shame, but, he
and Beruriah had to flee them-
selves to Palestine during the
night to save their forfeited
lives.
Beruriah's fortitude is best
illustrated by the well-known
story of the death of her • two
. young sons on a Sabbath. Rabbi I
Meir sat during the whole of
the Sabbath in school instruct-
ing his pupils. During his
absence from the house his
two young sons died, both of
uncommon beauty and en-
lightened in the Law. His wife
bore them to the bed-chamber
and spread a white blanket over
the bodies. When Rabbi Meir
came home in the evening and
asked where his sons were,
Beruriah handed him a goblet.
He praised the Lord and asked
again: "Where are my sons?"
"They will not be afar" she an-
swered and placed food before
him. When he had said grace
after the meal, she thus ad-
dressed him: "With thy per-
mission, I would like to ask you
a question." And when he re-
plied: "Ask it then," she said:
"A few days ago, a person en-
trusted some valuable jewels
into my custody, and now he
is demanding them of me.
Should I give them back to
him?" The Rabbi looked at her
in astonishment and asked
"Why wouldst thou hesitate to
restore to the man his own?"
She took his hand and led himl
to the bed-chamber: slowly she
removed the white cover from
the dead bodies. "Oh my sons,
my poor sons" loudly lamented
the rabbi. The mother turned
away and wept bitterly. Then
Despite the many drastic
changes and catastrophies
which have tormented the har-
assed Jews since her day,
Beruriah's wise teachings have
been preserved through the
pitiless flight of time. They
still served as a great power
in the lives of the Jews every-
where. Her Hebrew name, Ber-
uriah, truly fits her to perfec-
tion, for it means, "A Woman
whom God would choose."
