In De- cember, 13,920 visitors arrived in Israel, compared to 10,950 in December, 1962.) The new book, "Israel on $5 a Day" (Jewish News, March 6) presents such tips for economy- minded travelers. Rosenberg, rabbi of Toronto's Beth Tzedec Syna- gogue, who analyzes how and why in his latest book "America Is Different, The Search for Jewish Identity," published by Nelson & Sons (18 E. 41st, N.Y. 12). In locating the Jewish com- munity on the spiritual and cul- tural map of the United States. Dr. Rosenberg points out that it is among the religious groups themselves that Americans dis- criminate most. He notes that religious pluralism, often re- garded as the great American aspiration, is often a source of interreligious hostility ! Protestants still regard America as "their" country. For Jews, this situation is most ironic. As they shed their older status as just another ethnic or cultural group absorbed into America and begin to emerge as a religious community, they find themselves in direct competition with the members of the other two religions of America. Fears arise among Protestants and Catholics that they are threat- ened by the existence of a third religion. The author sees a growing conviction on the part of respon- sible and intellectually oriented churchmen, that the historic mis- sion of Christianity to the Jews should be abandoned. This is another way of saying that religiously, not only politically, Jews are equal—because Juda- ism is equal too! On the strength of this is founded the precept that all leaven should be burned on the Passover eve. "Leaven" and "unleaven" symbolize the evil and the good inclinations in man. It is obligatory for every Jew to relate the story of the Exodus, on Passover night. He who does so fervently and joy- ously, is worthy to rejoice in the Shekinah in the world to come. for rejoicing brings forth rejoicing; and Israel's joy causes the Holy One Himself to be glad, so that He calls together His family above and says unto them, "Come ye and harken unto the praises My children bring unto Me!
