Dafni has a long record of
service to Jewish causes both
in Israel and in the United
1States. In 1948, he was ap-
pointed Israel's Consul in Los
I Angeles. He returned to Israel
l in 1951 to serve as press of-
ficer and official spokesman for
the Foreign Ministry, as well as
serving on the Mixed Israel-
Arab Armistice Commission.
He was again appointed in
1948 to serve Israel overseas,
this time as Consul in New York
and director of the Israel Office
of Information. Following that
post, he became general direc-
tor of the American-Israel Cul-

where he helped found the Ein
Gev settlement, the first Jew-
ish colony on the eastern bank
of Lake Galilee.
With the advent of World
War II, Dafni enlisted in the
British Army and fought in the
middle eastern campaigns. In
one spectacular exploit, he led
a group of Jewish paratroopers
in a landing behind enemy lines
in his native Yugoslavia.
The group rescued downed
allied fliers, aided prisoners of
war and helped save Jewish re-
fugees from death and torture
at the hands of Nazi troops.
Following his discharge with
the rank of lieutenant, he re-
sumed his life in Ein Gev and
became active in the establish-
ment of Israel.
Safran, as president of the
Federation, this week called
the attention of members of
the Federation's governing
board to a report issued by
Gershenson, pointing to the
primary responsibility of the
members of the board to par-
ticipate in the campaign as

Passover Appeal

to Community by
JWF President

Hyman Safran, president of
the Jewish Welfare Federation,
issued the following Passover
appeal to the community:
"On behalf of the officers and
board of directors of the Jew-
ish Welfare Federation, may I
extend Passover greetings to
the Jewish communities of met-
ropolitan Detroit.
"Passover is the Season of
Freedom. It commemorates the
flight nearly 4,000 years ago of
our ancestors from the tyranny
of the Pharaohs to freedom.
"Its message is as meaningful
today as it was centuries ago.
In fact, its message has never
been more applicable than it is
in 1964.
"Today, as it did four thou-
sand years ago, Exodus means
survival to a vast number of
Jews in lands overseas; Jews
living in spiritual bondage, in
poverty, in fear and distress.
"Today, tens of thousands of
Jews in North Africa, in South
America and in countries of op-
pression in Eastern Europe
dream of living and going to
Israel, France and other demo-
cratic countries.
"Today, men, women and
children in many lands—includ-
ing our own—continue the up-
hill, never-ending struggle for
equality and dignity.
"Through the medium of the
Allied Jewish Campaign now
under way, we must pledge to
help those who still struggle
to throw off the oppressor and
seek to rebuild new lives .. .
"You can make Passover 1964
truly a Festival of Freedom for
thousands who yearn for the
miracle of deliverance."
