MAX FRIEDMAN BARBER SHOP Passover Quiz By RABBI SAMUEL J. FOX Why do we pour drops of wine from the cup when mentioning the plagues during the Seder? A number of reasons are giv- en for this practice. Some con- tend that the pouring out of drops makes the contents of the cup diminish and symbolizes the fact that after every plague the number of Egyptians decreased in the land. Others contend that the spilling of wine indicates that we recall the plagues with regret, since one should always be sad at afflictions that hap- pen to human beings, no matter who they are. The medieval German Kabbalists explain that altogether there are sixteen drops that are poured from the cup and that these drops rep- resent the sixteen sides of the Almight's sword which he wields when he brings affliction upon the sinners. * * * What is the proper way to pour these drops, from the cup directly or with one's finger? Some authorities claim that the drops should be directly emitted from the cup. It was once even customary to pour the drops directly on the ground. Rabbi Isaac Luria, the Kabbalist, ordained that the drops be poured directly from the cup into a broken vessel. Some claim that the drops should be spilt with the fore- finger because it would be sym- bolic of "the finger of God" (Exodus 8:15) which was evident during the plagues in Egypt. Some contend that the drops should he spilt with the little finger. Others claim it should be done with the fourth finger because this is the finger in which the Almighty smote the Egyptians. (Pirke D'Rabbi Elie- zer). Among the Yemenite Jews only the head of the household spilt the drops while the rest offered responses. They were spilt into an old vessel which was then thrown out with its contents far away from the house, as if to demonstrate that such plagues should never hap- pen to this house. In Italy it was the custom to spill the wine into a dishfull of water. In Kurdisten it was customary to spill the drops into an empty egg-shell which was later filled with tobacco, bitters, etc. and then throw away. It is interest- ing to note that some communi- ties would use water instead of wine, and that some refuse to spill wine because it would be On Our Way to Israel.
