ROME (JTA)—Pope Paul VI
criticized critics of the late
Pope Pius XII for his wartime
role and said the pontiff had
been the "victim of ungrateful
and unjust attacks."
While the Pope did not refer
directly to the controversial
play, "The D e p u t y," which
charges that Pope Paul failed to
speak out against the Nazi
slaughter of European Jewry,
the target was clear.
Pope Paul insisted that Pope
Pius "used his voice and work
to proclaim the right to justice,
to defend the weak, to succor
the suffering, to impede worse
evils and to smooth the ways of
peace." He made the statement
at the inauguration of a monu-
ment to Pope Pius in St. Peter's
Basilica.
Asserting that Pope Pius
knew the meaning of Nazism
and war, Pope Paul said that
if the pontiff "was not able
always to do as much as he
would have wished, he was
full of heartfelt feeling for a
world torn by war and in
vaded by the fury of totali-
tarianism and oppression."
Later, Pope Paul expressed
deep respect of the Jewish re-
ligion and said he is pleased
with the growing cordial rela-
tionship and constructive co-
operation between Catholics and
Jews. "I hope that these rela-
tions will continue and advance,
both in spiritual and temporal
matters," he stated.
The pontiff made his state -
ment to a delegation of the

Committee reported. It added
that "there is eagerness to do
everything possible to assure
the adoption of the schema on

It also reported that promi-
nent South American Catholic
laymen have offered to be of
assistance in working for the
adoption of the schema on Jews
and freedom of conscience.
