Hart Urged to Introduce Bill Against Bigots In a letter to Sen. Philip Hart, Detroiter Wolf Levitan urged introduction of a bill in Congress to ban activities by hate groups, both through the mails and assembly against minority groups. Levitan, who frequently com- ments on current events through his letters, called Sen. Hart's attention to the recent flood of literature from the American Nazi party and activities by the Ku Klux Klan. . .. It is not enough," Levi- tan wrote, "to punish the guilty ones, but we should have a federal law to prohibit the print- ing of such literature, to ban the distribution of same and to prevent their activities be- fore they can do the miserable damage to our good people." LETTER BOX Correspondent Repelled by Sale of German Helmets Editor The Jewish News: Being a Negro veteran, it has always seemed to me that the problems of any one sector of the community were inseparable from community problems as a whole. I am not writing to you to speak of social theory. I noticed an average display of toys in the window of a northwest stare. Included in the display were army kits with the plastic helmet and various weapons, and also included was a kit containing a gray plastic replica of a German helmet, a Luger and a burp gun. Having served in Europe I do not consid- er myself anti-any-ethnic group, but am against any system which prides itself on the abil- ity to wipe out large groups of people who commit no other crime than being different. I cannot imagine any healthy curious child who might happen to have these toys—being con- tent to play an afternoon as loser. From TV films the child is apt to have seen, the most in- delible impression is not that those wearing the German uni- form lost, but that they were physically brutal, always arro- gant, always anti-Semitic. One must assume that a child immersing himself into the ac- cepted version of a World War II German trooper would exhib- it the outward facets of that which he has learned to -ac- quaint with the role he is play- ing—and the viotim becomes the Jewish people. I felt the same revulsion and angered incredulity I would ex- pect to experience if I saw a toy kit at the local drugstore containing in in lot u r e KKK hoods, noose and blackwhip! It does not seem we have yet real- ized that the growth of hatred depends upon a moral indiffer- ence and mental ignorance too often exhibited in supposedly minor items. Sincerely, Donald L.
