Nope, Preparing for the Exodus Harriet Carnick Wed
Was Nothing Compared to This 10 Lawrence Kepes

By CHARLOTTE HYAMS
Along about now, when the
kosher-style Clean Up - Fix Up -
Paint Up campaign is launched
around our house—in honor of
the Exodus (the one before
Leon Uris')—I get scared.
Oh, it's not the paint brush
Mother hauls out (with that
five gallons of green paint she's
been saving for the kitchen the
past month). And it's not the
thought of those endless exo-
duses from kitchen to basement
with the hometzdicke dishes pre-
cariously perched on my head.
It's an. indefinable anxiety.
You see, I keep thinking about
thou-
that night a couple of
sand years ago when Moses
told my kinfolks' antecedents
to get a move on. "Tonight we
leave!" he said. I know darned
well there MUST have been
someone like my mother who
said. "WHAT! I'm not leaving
until my bread is done."
That's not all. She would first
have to lock all the doors, give
the dog some water and fix her
hat. God knows where we'd be
now.
I suppose, since the Jews are
always caring for their own,
Moses would have waited until
we got organized, Pharaoh
would have caught up with us,
and . . .
And Sparky would start bark-
ing, scare the Pharaoh out of
his wits, and all would be well.
Today's seder, actually, is
anti-climactical after the MO
mentous decisions and crises
that precede it: •

Mrs. Lewis B. Daniels
to Head NCJW Region

Mrs. Lewis B. Daniels, former
president of the Detroit Section,
National Council of Jewish
Women, was elected regional
president at the recent Mid-
eastern Regional Conference of
the NCJW in
Dayton, 0.
Mrs. Daniels
has served as
both first and
second vice
president of
the Mideastern
Region and
has been a
member of a
number of na-
tional Council Mrs. Daniels
committees.
Locally, she has been chair-
man of the Women's Division,
Allied Jewish Campaign, of
which she is still an executive
officer; president, Women's Di-
vision, Jewish Welfare Federa-
tion; vice president, Hadassah;
and executive vice president,
Women's Guild Sinai Hospital;
as well as a member of riiany
civic and communal groups.

"Our house the first night.
It's got to be our house the
first night. Sue can have the
second night. No, we can't have
both at our house, it's too much
with the children. What do you
mean go out to dinner?"
"Al will grind the horserad-
ish. He has to do the horse-
radish because he's always done
the horseradish. David always
does the haroses; Al has to do
the horseradish. It's only fair."
"This year I'm not going to
fuss. Just the turkey, the tzim-
mes, chicken soup, sweet pota-
toes, gefilte fish, chopped liver,
green vegetables and salad.
i For dessert I'm not going to
fuss either. Fruit, maybe, and
a pudding and a little honey
cake and some cookies, I think.
No, I'm not going to fuss like
last year."
"We won't use all. the dishes
this time. Just the milchige
regular dishes and Shabbos
dishes . . and the Fleishige
regular dishes and Shabbos
dishes. And maybe the glass
dishes for company do you
think? Maybe you'd better
bring them all up."
"How about starting the cup-
boards today? We'll do one a
day till they're done. But first,
help me paint the kitchen ... "

Goodwill Industries Warns Against Imposters

Goodwill Industries warns
householders to be on the watch
for impostor truck drivers who
say they are collecting discards
for Goodwill Industries.
Three important things to look
for if such persons come to the
door were pointed out by John
E. Hoskins, executive director:
1. Goodwill Industries does
not canvass house-to-house, but
responds only to a request for
pickup.

2. All Goodwill trucks are
painted yellow with blue letter-
ing, "Goodwill Industries."
3. Drivers are in uniform
with "Goodwill Industries" very
plainly marked on them.
Call TR 3-3600 to arrange for
pickup.
