An illustrated companion to
the Old Testament designed to
give laymen as well as students
and scholars a greater under-
standing of the Bible, is avail-
able for the first time.
The encyclopedic work, "The
Graphic History of the Jewish
Heritage", is the result of 25
years of intensive work by its
editor, Pinchas Wollman-Tsamir,
a Hebrew scholar.
A staggering number of
names, dates, places, and events
are presented with charts,
tables, illustrations and sum-
maries.
Chronological and geneologi-
cal charts are combined with
written explanations to depict
every phase in the Old Testa-
ment from Genesis to the Proph-
ets and the High Priests.
The book's graphs and
charts outline, describe and
quote from the Old Testa-
ment. Verse and chapter are
located, and explanations are
given for names, places and
events.
Commentary deals with the
15 judges, the 43 kings of Judah
and Israel, the 48 prophets, 7
prophetesses a n d 25 high
priests, among others.
Wollman - Tsamir conceived
the idea for the book while a
student of the University of
Frankfurt, Germany, before
World War II. In the preface,
he writes that he "began to
ponder the question of how to
present effectively the vast pan-
orama of our spiritual heritage
and its impressive procession of
personages in striking and
schematic form. Why couldn't
the graphic method and form-
ula used to illustrate scientific
data be adopted to Jewish lit-

erature?"
Leaving Nazi Germany in
1936, Wollman-Tsamir began to
draft charts and tables in what
was then Palestine. They were
to form the basis of his work,
which was interrupted by the
war.
He resumed with the aid of
many Israeli and other scholars
and educators. The work was
finished while he was in this
country during the past five
years.
