"The United Jewish Appeal
has for more than 25 years sym-
bolized humane compassion and
concern as well as Jewish mu-
tuality and responsibility. In a
world often darkened by inhu-
manity and indifference it has
held high a beacon of light of
the brotherliness which makes
us kin to all who are in need.
It has given vivid expression to
the basic principle that we Jews
form a fellowship of common
traditions. memories and obli-
gations. Statistics are available
that indicate the staggering to-
tal of financial resources that
have been poured into the work
of relief, rescue and rehabili-
tation by the UJA. We also
have a record of the more than
3,000,000 individuals who have
been the objects of this global
program. But no computer can
measure the hope, the dignity
and the reborn sense of inde-
pendence which the UJA
brought to so many who had
known the indescribable bitter-
ness of concentration camps.
No chart can disclose how often
the last spark of a will to live
was fanned into a bright re-
solve by the brotherly hand
which the UJA extended.
"Nor can the moral and
spiritual effects of this vast ef-
fort be translated into statistical
terms, effects not only upon
the recipients but also upon the
donors. It is the largest united
Jewish effort into which Jews
of every shade of belief and
opinion are joined. It has en-
riched the communal life of
American Jewry with a per-
speotive encompassing Jews the
world over. It has strengthened
our common bond as Jews by
inspiring us with a large re-
sponsibility and calling us to a
sacred task.
