One of the least publicized
mut most acute needs of the
Jewish Family and Children's
Service is for more foster par-
ents to care for the children of
broken homes who are brought
to the attention of the agency.
According to David B. Gold-
berg, in charge of child place-
ment at the agency, there are
hundreds of Jewish married
couples who are childless, or
whose children have grown, who
would enjoy rearing a child
from a broken home into a
happy, well-adjusted adult. "The
problem is that we don't know
about them, and they don't
know about us."
He said several children of
various ages are being cared
for in a temporary placement
environment because foster
homes cannot be found. These
children require and can ad-
just to normal family living
which a good foster home
provides.
Among the agency's children
who are placed, no two are
alike in their personal needs,
Goldberg said. One youngster
now waiting for a foster home
has had only one parent since
her early years. This parent has
had an extremely difficult life
and has been unable to provide
the emotional support the child
needed.
Now, in adolescence, the girl
wants and needs much help in
overcoming serious educational
handicaps and other social

shortcomings which her own
home, with a distraught par-
ent, cannot provide, Goldberg
said.
The Jewish Family and Chil-
dren's Service pays the foster
parents for the keep of these
children, so there is no finan-
cial sacrifice.

berg at DI. 1-5959.
