Israel Religious Minister Resents Interference by Nine U.S. Groups

JERUSALEM (JTA) — Inter-
ior Minister Moshe Shapiro des-
cribed as an "unwarranted in-
terference" in Israeli affairs, a
cable sent by leaders of seven
major American Jewish organi-
zations calling on Prime Minis-
ter Levi Eshkol to resist pres-
sure by "extremist religious
groups" in the United States
supporting legislation that
would abridge religious free-
dom in Israel.
Asserting that laws regard-
ing religious matter in Israel
are established by a majority
of the Knesset, Israel's Parlia-
ment, according to the will of
the people, Shapiro said that
American religious Jewish or-
ganizations never interfered
in matters of religion and the
laws of Israel. He noted that an
exception was the issue of the
projected non-kosher kitchen
aboard the liner Shalom, add-
ing that "this stemmed from the
assumption that the Shalom was
chiefly intended for Jewish
travelers from America."
Charging that the message
from the Jewish groups was in-
spired rather than spontaneous,
Shapiro said that if they wished
to "say something against U.S.
rabbis" they should have ad-

dressed the protest to the lat-
ter rather than to Premier Esh-
kol. In another comment on the
cabled protest, Religious Af-
fairs Minister Zorach Warhaftig
said "there is only one way to
influence legislation in Israel
and that is by settling here and
participating in the Knesset elec-
tions."
(In New York, the Agudah
Labor Organization issued a pro-
test against the seven major
Jewish organizations for send-
ing their cable to Premier Esh-
kol. The extreme Orthodox la-
bor group announced that it
will leave the ranks of the
American Jewish Congress with
which it is affiliated. The AJ
Congress is one of the seven
central Jewish bodies which
signed the cable to Premier
Eshkol. The other six are:
American Jewish Committee,
Bnai Brith, Central Conference
of American Rabbis, Rabbini-
cal Assembly, Union of Ameri-
can Hebrew Congregations and
United Synagogue of America.

Orthodox Rabbis Make Statement
on Interreligious Cooperation

In a statement of policy gov-
erning interreligious relations.
the Rabbinical Council of Amer-
ica declared as "incongruous
with the fundamentals of reli-
gious liberty and freedom of
conscience" any of the following
suggestions:
"That the historical worth
of a faith community be viewed
against the backdrop of another
faith;" the idea of a nondemo-
cratic confrontation in which
one community places the other
beneath itself; and the "mere
hint that a revision of basic his-
toric attitudes is anticipated."

Such an approach the Or-
thodox Council asserted, "is
unacceptable to any self-re-
specting faith community that
is proud of its past, vibrant
and active in the present and
determined to live on in the
future and to continue serv-
ing G-d in its own individual
way."
"Only a full appreciation of
the fact," the statement con-
tinues, "that each religious com-
munity has its own way of life
. will help promote the spirit
of cooperation among the
faiths."
