A strange -coincidence oc-
cured during the recent Winter
Olympics. At virtually the same
time the young Jewish figure
skating team, Vivienne and Ron
Joseph of Highland Park, Ill.,
missed winning the bronze
medal in the pairs competition
by a fraction of a point, Sport
Magazine hit the newstands with
an article devoted to some of
the ills inherent in the sport of
figure skating in this country.
One of the points highlighted
the difficulty Jewish competitors
encounter in their quest for
championships. Iry Jaffee, twice
an Olympic speed-skating gold
medalist, laid it on.-the line in
the article when he said: "With
the title comes a lot of parties
and balls, so the clubs would
find it embarrassing to herald a
champ whom they weren't in full
social favor of. Or goes to the
wrong church, if you want to be
more brutal about it. Of course,
a lot of this is hard to pin down,
but I personally have overheard
judges saying before a meet,
'Do you know so-and-so is Jew-
it turned out, the
Josephs lost their medal be-
cause an American judge
voted them the lowest of all
the scores they received. The
competition was seen on tele-
vision here in the United
States, and although a living-
room armchair is not real
place from which to judge, the
consensus of . many qualified
experts was that the Josephs
were superior to the third
place Canadian team. Jaffee
says: "The Josephs were
In light of this it must be
noted that the Josephs twice
have lost the U.S. national title
by the narrowest of margins.
Jaffee says: "Figure skating is
the most prejudicial of sports.
The outcome depends solely on
the official's emotional outlook.
If a judge has a personal anta-
gonism against a competitor for
any reason, it can easily be re-
flected in the scoring."
While the majority of judges
are above this, Iry adds that
there are those who will give
way to their prejudices.
At the moment, one of the
best young Jewish figure skaters
in the nation is 14-year-old
Taffy Pergament of Rye, N.Y.,
who took second in the Junior
Ladies National Championship.
She lost by the barest margin.
