Controversy Rages Over 'The Deputy'

the play in New York" in the
face of reported threats of vio-
lence and other reprisals."
"The play neglects the res-
ponsibility of the German peo-
ple for their avid embracing
of the Nazi ideology. It neglects
the responsibility of the leaders
of the free world for their own
silence to the frantic .pleas that
came from the Warsaw Ghetto,
from Auschwitz, from Buchen-
wald, from Dachau.
`The Deputy' is valuable as
a reminder of the tragic depths
to which man can sink in his in-
humanity to man. But in its ob-
cc";
session with the responsibility
of one man—ever so important
a figure as the Pontiff of the
Roman Catholic Church—it dis-
torts and blurs the real mean-
ing of the Nazi era—that tens
of millions of good, honest, God-
fearing men and women must,
by their indifference to brutal-
ity and their silence to their
neighbors cry of anguish, share
in the responsibility for the
most awesome tragedy of our
time."
Herman Shumlin, producer
of the play, replying to Cardi-
nal Spellman, said the pur-
pose of the production is to
ask "all people — Christians
and Jews—to examine their
conscience and their own re-
sponsibility." He said the play
makes no statement whatever
that "in effect holds Pope
Pius XII guilty of Nazi
crimes." He added:
"Last week I heard Cardinal
Cushing of Boston say on tele-
vision that he would like to go
and see the play. I would sug-
gest that Cardinal Spellman
might do the same. As far as
the messages of condolence
from Jews after Pope Pius XII's
death, it seems to me that it is
quite customary — no matter
who the important person is
who dies — for people of im-
portance, including presidents
and kings, to send messages of
condolences. . . I remember
that even when Stalin died,
President Eisenhower sent a
message of condolence. I myself
believe that Pope Pius XII was
a most unhappy man. But his

200 Jews in Israel
Took Other Religions
During Last 10 Years

JERUSALEM, (JTA)—About
900 Jewish pupils attended
classes in 11 Christian schools
in Israel during the 1962-63 aca-
demic year, Prime Minister Levi
Eshkol reported to the Cabinet.
The total is about half the num-
ber of Jewish children in Chris-
tian schools in this country
usually reported.
Among the 11 Christian
schools with Jewish pupils, the
Prime Minister reported, three
are missionary institutions
where 95 Jewish students are
provided gratis with lodging,
food and clothing. None of the
11 schools, he said, is recog-
nized by the government or in-
cluded in the Israeli school net-
work. This he noted, brings up
the point that the parents of
these children are violating Is-
rael's compulsory education
law, and the ministry of educa-
tion will have "to look into this
aspect."
In his report, Eshkol also
noted that, since 1954, 200 Jews
in this country have become
converted to either Christiani-
ty or Mohammedanism—while
407 Christians, Moslems and
Druzes have embraced Judaism.

unhappiness hardly could have
equalled the misery of the six
million Jews who died without
a word of remonstrance from
him."

Vatican Editor Defends
Pius XII Stand on Jews
During the Nazi Period
ROME, (JTA)—An article de-
fending the late Pope Pius XII
against charges made in the
play, "The Deputy"—that the
Pontiff deliberately maintained
silence instead of speaking out
publicily against Hitler's pro-
gram for the annihilation of
European Jewry—was printed
here by l'Oservatore Romano
the official newspaper of the
Vatican.
The article, opening a series,
was written by Raimondo Man-
zine, editor of the Vatican organ
and was cued to the fact that
the controversial drama, by
German playwright Rolf Hoch-
huth, opened its run in New
York last week.
Manzine quoted at length

from a letter by Dr. Robert M.
W. Kempner, a former German
political scientist now in the
United States, and a leading
prosecutor of German diplomats
and Cabinet members at the
Nazi war crimes trials in Nur-
emberg from 1945, to 1949. Dr.
Kempner's letter had absolved
Pope Pius of the charges in the
Hochhuth play, stating, among
other things, that a public dec-
laration by Pope Pius XII would
have been a "suicidal provoca-
tion" that could have resulted
in the death of many more Jews
and Catholic priests.
According to Manzine, the
"preferable" course for Pope
Pius was the one he took: "To
continue untiringly, even in sil-
ence the work of aid and pro-
tection carried on fervidly by
Pope Pius XII, and, through
diplomatic channels and the
hierarchal network to attempt
to prevent and limit the hor-
rible initiatives and to comfort
and support the victims."

MONTREAL, (JTA)—Canadi-
an Jewish Congress sent a tele-
gram to Guy Favreau, Canada's
minister of justice, stressing
that the recent distribution of
anti-Jewish propaganda in To-
ronto "patently incites to geno-
cidal actions."
The CJC requested the min-
ister to give study and to take
action within the criminal code
on the specific basis of incite-
ment to violent actions. It add-
ed that this spread of hate ma-
terials also offers other grounds
for serious remedial steps.
