Trotsky's 'Diary
in Exile' Issued
as a Paperback
Leon Trotsky's "Diary in
Exile-1935," originally pub-
lished by Harvard University
Press and now made available
in a paperback by Atheneum
(162 E. 38th, NY), remains
among the important doCuments
relating to the famous exile's
experiences and his attitudes on
many aspects of world affairs.
Especially significant are the
warnings that were made by
Trotsky against the Hitler dan-
ger as it has already begun to
emerge at the time.
Trotsky, as his diary reveals,
was very critical of Leon Blum
and at times was bitter in his
repudiation of Blum's opposition
to Trotskyism.
The diary was translated from
the Russian by Elena Zarudnaya.
Operation Friendship, the De-
troit Section, National Council
of Jewish Women's program to
help convalescent mental pa-
tients cross the bridge from
hospital care to home care, has
moved into a home of its own.
Operated until now in small
quarters in the Council office
building, Operation Friendship
is now located in its own quar-
ters, "Council Lounge," 7740
West McNichols.
Operation Friendship is one
of a. number of projects de-
veloped by Council as the re-
sult of a research program
conducted several years ago
to determine important needs
of the community. Others in-
clude the Orchards, a residen-
tial treatment home for young
children, in Livonia; and the
Receiving Hospital Lounge
program in the men's psy-
chiatric ward.
Operation Friendship pa-
tients, referred by various hos-
pitals, are welcomed in a re-
laxed, friendly setting. These
people are often alone, insecure
and in need of this type of plan-
ned recreational program per-
mitting normal social contacts
with others.
Under the chairmanship of
Mrs. Victor Shiffman and Mrs.
Harry Jackson, trained Council
volunteers plan afternoons for
their "members", guided by pro-
fessional social worker Mrs.
George Rubin. Activities include
games, parties, trips and special
programs, along with handi-
crafts to encourage the use of
any skills these men and women
may have.
