Ex-Detroiter Mrs. Sarah Kontaroff Edith Schreiber
Has Unique Honor in Israel Kibbutz to Wed Ca I iforn i n

Mrs. Sarah Komaroff, the first
member of Kibbutz Deganiah
Bet to become a great grand-
mother, is as active at 73 as
she was when she first moved
there from Detroit in 1933.
Mrs. Komaroff still puts in a
full day's work in the kitchen
of the Jordan Valley settle-
ment, according to her daugh-
ter, Mrs. Charles Milan, of 19900
Canterbury.
To Mrs. Komaroff, one of the
founders of Pioneer Women in
Detroit, belongs another unique
honor: she was the first De-
ganiah resident to be admitted
to full membership at the "ripe
old age of 44." Membership is
usually reserved to the young,
active residents.
Despite incurable cancer,

"WM W

m

how do you say Paradiso?"

"Eden" is undoubtedly the
word that Chef Boy-Ar-Dee
Was searching for to describe
the true Italian-style flavor of
this wonderfully rich sauce.

CHEF BOY-AR-DEE D
SPAGHETTI SAUCE
with Mushrooms
So good with so many dishes

—spaghetti, macaroni or rice,
for left over meat or fish, for
cheese and omelets. Made
with flavor-peak tomatoes,
spices and tender mushrooms,
simmered to perfection for
true Italian taste. Keep plenty
on hand.

Mrs. Komaroff lives her the-
ory: "If a person cannot work,
he's worth nothing." She has
a huge garden, and she made
2,000 kreolach for the holi-
days, reported Mrs. Milan.
"Her doctor says either he
will have a heart attack, or mam-
ma will do what she wants," Mrs.
Milan said. "Work is part of
mamma. She had a grocery store
here and worked for the Hebrew
Infants Home."
Mrs. Komaroff, born in Rus-
sia. married the late David
Komaroff in Detroit. When their
daughter Florence (now Mrs.
Milan) was married in 1933, the
Komaroffs sold everything and
took their other daughter, Ber-
tha, to Israel.
Bertha, who is now married
to a Toronto-born Israeli, has
three children and a year-old
grandson. All live in Deganiah.
The 41 - year - old kibbutz,
which numbers some 700 resi-
dents, is known as VIP Row.
Premier Levi Eshkol is ori-
ginally from Deganiah and
often comes to visit. Kaddish
Luz, speaker of the House in
the Knesset, is there, with his
wife, every weekend. The late
Eleanor Roosevelt was a guest,
and former Ambassador Og-
den Reid stayed several days.
1VI1 s. Komaroff has seen her
kitchen grow from a mere shack,
to buildings bombed by the Sy-
rians during the Sinai Campaign,
to, finally, a large dining room.
When the first refugees were
brought to Israel in the first
years of statehood, the govern-
ment asked Mrs. Komaroff to
visit the new frontier kibbutzim
and teach quantity cookery.
During the Sinai Campaign,
Mrs. Komaroff's daughter served
as a nurse. She and one other
woman were the only females
remaining when the women and
children were evacuated in the
middle of the night.
The resistance of Deganiah to
the invading Arabs is already
legendary; a tank still stands
where the Deganiah residents
fought off the enemy with sticks
and stones and Molotov cock-
tails.
"But the pioneers, of De-
ganiah Bet have nothing on
Mamma," Mrs. Milan laughed.
"They call her the wonder of
the world."
