Friday, February 28, 1964—THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS- 10 Moscow Religious Jews Renting Premises to Prepare Matzoth LONDON (JTA)—The Jew- ish religious community of Moscow is organizing the bak- ing of matzoth this year in specially rented premises in a suburb of the Soviet capital, according to a Moscow dispatch received here by the Daily W o r k e r, the organ of the British Communist Party. The dispatch stated that the information about Jewish communal matzoh bakery came from the Novosti Press Agency, an official Soviet government news s e r v i c e. Novosti is quoted as declar- ing that "matzoth will be pre- pared with the community's own resources" and t h a "each religious community, depending on local condi- tions and possibilities, is en- suring supplies" of matzoth. Novosti is further quoted as stating that, last year. the Tbi- lisi Synagogue, in Soviet Geor- gia, conducted a bakery that produced 100 tons of matzoth. According to the news agency, the synagogue in Marina Roshcha near Moscow, last year "ensured supplies for its con- gregation on a collective basis," while the congregation at Mos- cow's Central Synagogue was told by Rabbi Jehuda Leib Levin, its spiritual leader, "how to prepare matzoth at home." U.S. Veterans of Israel Calls Former Volunteers American Veterans of Israel, an organization of volunteers from the U.S. and Canada who served in Aliyah Beth and in the armed forces of Israel dur- ing the struggle for indepen- dence, is in the midst of a na- tionwide reorganization. Efforts are underway to reach former volunteers. Well over 1,000 young Amer- icans volunteered their serv- ices in 1947-1948, some to man the rescue ships, others to cam- paign in the Army, Navy and Air Force of Israel.
