Weizmann Institute
to Welcome Its
1st Turkish Scientist
REHOVOTH—The Weizmann
Institute of Science will be help-
ing to repay an old debt when
it welcomes next month its first
visiting research fellow from
Turkey, Prof. Mehmet Atif Sen-
gun.
Many of Israel's leaders, in-
cluding former Prime Minister
Ben-Gurion and the late Presi-
dent Ben-Zvi. studied in Turkish
universities when the Holy Land
was part of the Ottoman Em-
pire.
Prof. Sengun, who will be
coming with his wife and
daughter, is head of the de-
partment of general zoology
at Istanbul University and a
member of the National Coun-
cil for Science and Technol-
ogy in Turkey. For over two
years he was dean of the
faculty of science in his uni-
versity.
Prof. Sengun is the first re-
cipient of one of the recently
established Van Leer Fellow-
ships, which are primarily in-
tended for scientists from de-
veloping nations. While in Re-
hovoth he will be working with
Professor Leo Sachs, head of the
institute's genetics section.
The Weizmann Institute has
been playing host to increasing
numbers of visiting scientists,
almost 60 of them this year
alone. This figure does not in-
clude men and women who came
for only a few weeks.
Gabriel Riesser, a leading
champion of Jewish emancipa-
tion in 19th Century Germany,
became the first Jew elected to
the German National Assembly.
He was a member of the delega-
tion which offered the imperial
crown to King Frederick Wil-
liam IV of Prussia.
