Reasonable. Mr. Stahl, UN 4-3346, UN 4-0326 after 5 p.m. TEL AVIV (JTA)—A roaring gale pounded port facilities at Eilat last week with 15-foot waves and caused damages esti- mated at 2 million pounds ($666,000). The winds swept away parts of new port facilities under con- struction and portions of a newly drained area. The heavi- est damage was inflicted on a special crane mounted on a 50- foot raft. Technicians were com- pelled to blow up the crane because it had weakened sup- ports on part of a new jetty. A number of rafts and motor ships, as well as fishing boats, were swept out to sea and either sank or were battered on to the shore. The damage may jeopardize the timetable for activation of the new port facilities. A six month delay is expected because many of the wrecked machines, cranes and rafts must be or- dered from abroad. The Right Rev. Philip M. Hannan, auxiliary bishop of Washington, spoke to a Jewish lay group at the Adas Israel congregation. Such interdenomi- national discussions were sup- ported by the Ecumenical Council, and Bishop Hannan de- voted his talk to the Council discussions which related to the attitude of the Catholic Church toward the Jews. In this connection, Bishop Hannan said that he expects the next session of the Council to declare that the Catholic Church considers itself "the re- ligious heir of the Jewish people, the chosen people of God." Coming out strongly in favor of a declaration by the Vatican Council on religious freedom, Bishop Hannan said such a move would be a "chal- lenge to the whole empire of Communist enslavement." American bishops at the Vati- can Council's last meeting firmly supported such a decla- ration of religious freedom. The bishop denied, however, that anti-Semitism, especially that of the Nazis, was inspired by Catholic teachings. Instead, what is involved is the need to root out from the minds of Catholics the prejudices which were created by the anti-Semit- ism, Bishop Hannan asserted. man government does not know the present whereabouts of Dr. Josef Mengele, the former Auschwitz murder camp "selec- tion" doctor, a foreign office spokesman declared. Undersecretary Karl Car- stens, answering a question posed by Social Democratic Deputy Gerhardt Jahn, told the Bundestag that rumors that Mengele, whose assign- ment at the camp was to choose victims for death, was residing in Paraguay, had been proven false. He said, "We have been assured by the government of Paraguay that he is not in that country." The deputy then asked: "Do you know where he is?" and the undersecretary replied, "No, but we are searching for him." Dr. Mengele, sought as an ac- complice to murder, recently protested, through his wife, the action of two West German uni- versities which deprived him of his doctorate titles. The legal action is being handled for him in absentia by an attorney em- powered to represent his inter- ests.
