The Royal couple participated in a planting ceremony of King Baudouin Forest near Nazareth. Yaakov Tsur, world chairman of the Jewish National Fund, presided at the ceremony. The royal entourage was greeted on their arrival in Jeru- salem by Mayor Mordechai Ish- Shalom and then proceeded through the decorated streets of the city of Mount Zion where they visited the Church of the Dormition and lit six candles in the Martyrs Chamber in me mory of the million Jews who were murdered by the Nazis during the Second World War. The king and queen were guests at a luncheon given by President Shazar which vOus also attended by Prime Minister Levi Eshkol, cabinet ministers, members of the Knesset, Israel's Parliament, and justices of the Supreme Court. The Hebrew Academy held its seventh anniversary dinner, sponsored by the PTA, Tues- day marking the seventh year since the inception of this Heb- rew day school. The school was formed to promote Jewish studies in the suburbs, and to instill a love for Jewry. Its program con- tains both secular and religious studies. Rabbi James I. Gordon, of Young Israel of Oak-Woods, was guest speaker. Rather than speaking about the Hebrew Academy, or the day school movement in Detroit, Rabbi Gordon focused his attention on the day school movement in general. He stated that originally the day schools either negat- ed secular studies completely, or accepted these studies so completely that the two areas were treated as completely separate entities. A comprom- ise between these two philo- sophies had to be—and was, he feels — reached in the modern day school. Rabbi Gordon stated that the ideal must be a form of inte- gration, but without giving up any Jewishness. He feels that there is a need to build a bridge between Israel and the United States through Torah and lan- guage. The day school then be- comes an important factor in the construction of this bridge. In closing, Rabbi Gordon said the aim of the day school should be "leadership through excellence." The program was concluded with a musical selection by Avram "Skip" Rosenthal.
