Controversial Issue
The provocative German play "The Deputy," which attacks
Pope Pius XII for failure to denounce Nazi deportations and
mass murder of Jews, is now sparking vigorous controversy
in New York. . . . It is feared that it may stir interreligious ten-
sion in the United States after it opens on Broadway on Feb.
26. . . . Already there is sharp division of opinion even within
Jewish organizations. . . . The Brooklyn Jewish Community
Council, which represents the largest section of the Jews in
New York, is the best example. . . . There are close to 1,000,000
Jews in Brooklyn—the largest Jewish population in America—
and in their name the Council issued a statement defending
Pope Pius and criticizing "The Deputy" as a disservice to inter-
faith relations. . . . However, no sooner was this statement issued,
than the Rat binical Assembly of Brooklyn disavowed the state-
ment. . . . Similarly, the National Conference of Christians and
Jews denounced the play as "unjust and unrealistic" in condemn-
ing Pope Pius and said it considered the production of "The
Deputy" in New York "a disservice to the cause of Christian-
Jewish relations" . . . Nevertheless, both Jewish and non-Jewish
clubs and fraternal groups are buying advance tickets for their
members. . . . Herman Shumlin, the Jewish director and pro-
ducer of the play, claims he is producing "The Deputy" on
Broadway because he believes it to be "a play of importance to
all people" . . . However, it seeems that he, too, is expecting
trouble and antagonism. . . . This is why the actors rehearse
the play behind closed doors and there will be no public pre-
views. . . . The play will open cold to the public on Feb. 26,
and from then on that the public will be the judge. . . . It is
agreed by all who have seen the play in other countries that
nobody remains indifferent after seeing it—one is either for
it or against it.

Jewish Reaction
The leading Jewish central organizations are abstaining from
expressing opinions on the play until after the opening. . . .
The play will not be exactly as its German author Rolf Hochhuth
wrote it. . . . It will be substantially cut. . . . Leaders of the
major Jewish organizations feel it will make a difference as to
what parts of the play will be omitted. . . . None of the major
Jewish organizations is happy over the fact that the play has
come to New York where there is complete harmony between
the various religious groups. . . . At the same time they feel that
whatever its shortcomings as theater or history, the play has
opened serious discussion about the responsibility of church and
religion in dealing with profound problems of human morality.
. . . They emphasize that the fact that the playwright. is Protes-
tant and the American producer is Jewish is irrelevant to the
merits of the play, and they believe that no one should attempt
to judge the actions of the late Pope Pius XII on the basis of a
drama which combines fact and fiction. . . . "The Deputy" has
been performed in more than 20 theaters in European countries,
has caused tension everywhere it was played, but while the
controversy in Europe was largely a Catholic-Protestant one,
Jewish leaders in New York fear that in this country Jews may
not be able to escape involvement in this dispute because of the
theme of the play and the fact that its producer and director
is Jewish. . . . Some of the major Jewish organizations feel that
the amity and cooperation which now characterize inter-religious
relations in the United States should not be diminished by an
exchange of charges and countercharges triggered by this dra-
matic production. . . . They do not suggest that the fate of
European Jewry during World War II be ignored or bypassed.
. . . But they think that the author's treatment of Pius XII
involves a combination of known facts and personal interpreta-
tion and that this combination creates delicate issues . . . They
point out that the fact that the play has won great applause
among the Germans should indicate the danger of using "The
Deputy" to absolve the criminals by shifting the guilt.

Signs of Time
New York's "Black Jews" have now, for the first time,
approached the New York Federation of Jewish Philanthropies
with a request for an allocation to build a synagogue for them
. . . The leaders of the Black Jewish community claim that there
are about 120,000 colored Jews in New York, some of them
Falashas, some American-born Negroes . . . This figure may be
greatly exaggerated; however, there is a substantial number of
colored Jews in New York . . . They are scattered in various
sections of the city, with the majority of them living in Harlem,
the Negro-populated part of New York . . . It is known that
they maintain five small synagogues, and photographs of their
worshiping in one of these synagogues—with a Torah and in
Jewish prayer shawls—have on numerous occasions appeared
in various publications . . . It is also known that the children
of some of the Black Jews attend Yeshivas and Jewish Orthodox
schools in the city . . . However, little is known as to their
origin and to what extent their claims to Judaism are valid .. .
The New York Federaion of Jewish Philanthropies will, there-
fore, undertake a study to establish what-is-what in the New
York's black Jewish community . . . The remarkable thing is
the fact that the leaders of the black Jews, even their rabbis,
never had the courage to demand that they be considered an
integral part of New York's organized Jewish community . . .
Now that integration of colored people has become part and
parcel of American life in general, the colored Jews have simi-
larly decided to ask for full recognition by existing Jewish
organizations . . . Whether their request for funds to build a
synagogue will be granted by the Federation is, however, ques-
tionable, since the Federation does not give grants for syna-
gogues, although it is now raising a huge fund for extending
the buildings of communal institutions . . . The huge capital
fund of the Federation is intended primarily for the extension
of Jewish hospital buildings which serve the population on a
non-sectarian basis.
