Eye Nylon Made at
Weizmann Institute

REHOVOTH, Israel — Great
interest has been shown by in-
dustrial concerns in Russia and
Japan in an improved method of
making nylon developed by the
Weizmann Institute of Science.
The new process is the result
of five years' work in the plastic
research laboratory, led by Dr.
David Vofsi.
This was disclosed in a state-
ment here by Prof. Shneior Lif-
son, scientific director of the
institute.
Some stages of the produc-
tion process are simpler than
with existing procedures, and
the nylon appears to have a
higher melting point and to
be more resistant to radia-
tion.
Weizmann Institute scientists
hope the simplified methods in-
volved in producing it will mean
lower costs as well, but this can
only be judged in the actual
manufacturing.
The Weizmann Institute does
not have the millions of dollars
needed to carry its new nylon
from the test tube to the factory,
but its methods will probably
be utilized by local. or foreign
companies.
