Offers Mixed-Marriage 'Antidote'
Since opportunity for dis-

Differentiating between mixed
marriage ("where husband and
wife belong to two different re-
ligious communities") and inter-
marriage ("where one partner
converts"), the speaker insisted
that "Judaism is not opposed to
intermarriage.
"Judaism is eager to make
proselytes—not to save souls,
but to strengthen ranks and
share convictions. We don't dis-
courage intermarriage providing
the non-Jewish partner con-
verts." • ,
What then, after all, is a
Jew? she continued. "The
distinct badge of Jewishness
is commitment. We're Jews
only if we're dedicated to
Torah, pursuing that religious
civilization that has enabled
us to survive."
She insisted that in terms of
religious education, "we're los-
ing, generation by generation."
If it seems that the Jewish child
today knows more than his par-
ents, Dr. Weiss-Rosmarin said,
it's only because the children of
the Depression era were a "ne-
glected generation." Compared
to their grandparents, young-
sters today "are not getting the
equivalent of a good Jewish

Jewish illiteracy. That's the
problem.
Putting aside her pen to take
up the vocal sword on the sub-
ject of "Intermarriage—the Di-
lution of Our Yiddishkeit,"
editor Trude Weiss-Rosmarin
offered one 'antidote' to mixed
marriages: Jewish education.
Dr. Weiss-Rosmarin, editor of
The Jewish Spectator, was in-
vited to Detroit by the local
alumni of Alpha Omega Dental
Fraternity.
Two weeks before, sociologist
Erich Rosenthal had gone over
the much-discussed intermar-
riage figures in his American
Jewish Year Book study.
"I do not accept Dr. Rosen-
thal's statistics," she said.
"They are not representative.
(Dr. Rosenthal's study cen-
tered on the Jewish popula-
tions of Iowa and Washing-
ton, D.C.) The intermarriage
rate is actually lower than is
commonly thought."
But what worries her, Dr.
Weiss-Rosmarin continued, "is
not the number of Jewish people
or even organizational survival,
but the cultural survival of
American Jewry."
