I in Israel to Jerusalem Government 'Between You ... and Me' TEL AVIV (JTA)—The Soviet government has agreed to sell its land holdings in Israel to the Is- rael government, it was report- ed here in Maariv, leading eve- ning newspaper. The report said the Soviet government asked $4.5 million for the properties and that Is- rael sugggested $3 million, with two-thirds of the payment to be made in citrus fruits. The Russian move was be- lieved to stem from the Soviet need for foreign currency to (Copyright, 1964 Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Inc.) Communal Perspectives How will American Jewry look 20, or even 10, years from now? . . . The immediate future of American Jewish community was widely discussed at a conference sponsored by the National Jewish Welfare Board, in its capacity as the national association of Jewish Community Centers . . . The Jewish Centers are sensi- tively aware of the fact that American Jewish life is undergoing rapid changes . . . These changes are partly the result of certain factors in American life in general, but are influenced primarily by purely Jewish developments . . . There is, for instance, the fact that the number of Jewish immigrants is now very small while the number of American-born Jews is getting larger from year to year . . . There is the fact that the Jewish family in America is getting relatively smaller while intermarriage among American Jews is constantly growing . . . There is a growing •proportion of Jewish families in the middle or better income classes . . . There is a student generation which drifts away from Judaism and is becoming ex-Jewish although not interested in any other religion . . . These and other changes have their impli- cations for the Jewish Centers and their activities . . . They are of concern to other Jewish communal bodies since they affect the entire outlook for Jewish life in this country. * * Basic Conclusions The conference participants agreed that, barring a world catastrophe, and assuming full employment, the American Jew will continue to be affluent and well educated . . . He has become well accultured and he will continue to become even more so .. . However, they noted that despite this high degree of accultura- tion. the American Jew rarely takes the deliberate step of con- version and thus he stops short of complete assimilation . . . This was interpreted to mean that large numbers of Jews, while not entirely removed from the Jewish world, live much more of their own lives in the general non-Jewish world . .. The conference participants established that American Jews by and large are not religiously oriented, even when they join synagogues . . . Most of the participants agreed that in Jewish life religion and secu- larism were two sides of the same coin . . . They pointed out that the American Jewish community is made up of a large num- ber of non-religious organizations, each of which in one way or another helps develop Jewish identification . . . The pessimistic view on the future of the American Jewish community was brought to the conference by the presentation of demographic data, including the low Jewish fertility rate, the lack of Jewish immigration, the increasing rate of intermarriage, the rising rate of social pathology, and the greater tendency to what has been called "multi-phased conversion" . . The picture based on this data resulted in the inescapable conclusion by the participants that Jewish survival in American cannot be taken for granted and that a positive program of action is needed . . . At the same time it became clear at the conference that, barring a homicidal anti-Semitic American Hitler, or an all-out nuclear attack on the major American cities where most of the Jews reside, or a whole- sale but improbable emigration to Israel, Jews will still be around on the American scene in substantial numbers in the year 1985. Dr. Moses Spatt, hospital president, said the funds, the largest single grant ever made to the institution, will go to the department of medicine and will extend over a four-year period. The grant covers the costs of the hospitalization of patients under study, as well as the costs for special personnel and equip- ment.
