Mrs. Yetta Grunt Dies at Age 67;
Known for Piety, as Food Expert

Dies at 59 in Tel Aviv

Mrs. Yetta Grunt, of 18315
Birwood, one of the best known
Detroiters in the grocery busi-
ness in the Jewish areas, died
Wednesday morning after a very
brief illness.
Funeral services were held
Thursday noon at Chesed shel
Emes.
Surviving are her husband,
Nathan; a son, Dr. Abraham H.
Grant; five daughters, Mrs.
Harry (Faye) Krohner, Mrs.
Rubin (Sarah) Folkoff, Mrs.
Samuel (Lillian) Glanz, Mrs.
Albert (Rose) Ross and Mrs.
Lawrence (Libby) Newman; 19
grandchildren and four sisters.
Known for her piety, Mrs.
Grunt, who was an active
member of Beth Emanuel
Tikvah congregation, Hadas-
sah and other movements,
and her husband with whom
she was active in the grocery
business observed the Sab-
baths and all the holidays.
Their present store, Grunt's
Market at 18252 Wyoming,
will be closed for the entire
week of the Shivah period.
She was a generous contrib-
utor to many Jewish causes and
aided Yeshivoth in this coun-
try and in Israel. The Jewish
National Fund boxes always oc-
cupied important places in the

Coming to this country in
1923 from Russia, Mrs. Grunt
and her husband opened their
first store on Hastings Street in
1924. They moved to 12th
Street and were there for 27
years before coming to the
Wyoming location in 1953.
Mrs. Grunt was known for
the good will she spread, for
the many friendships she cre-
ated and became most popular
for Grunt Food Products she
personally prepared and which
became attractions in the Grunt
Market.

World Jewish Congress
in Europe Airs Problem
of Soviet, African Jews

PARIS (JTA) — The Euro-
pan executive of the World
Jewish Congress met here Tues-
day to review the current situ-
ation of the Jewish communi-
ties in the Soviet Union and
North Africa.
The meeting considered de-
velopments in Catholic - Jewish
relations following the last ses-
sion of the Ecumenical Council
and the visit of Pope Paul VI
to Israel.
Also reviewed were the ac-
tivities of the WJC in the
field of human rights at the
United Nations and the Coun-
cil of Europe.
The meeting heard reports of
activities of international anti-
Semitic Nazi-Fascist groups and
on the prosecution of war crimi-
nals in West Germany.
P. Dreyfus-Schmidt of France,
Jacob Halevy and Dr. Joseph
Sagal of Britain presided at suc-
cessive sessions of the meeting,
which was attended by repre-
sentatives of communities and
affiliated organizations in Aus-
tria, Britain, France, West Ger-
many, The Netherlands, Ire-
land, Italy and Sweden.

Composer's Remains
Cremated in New York

PHILADELPHIA (JTA) -
-The remains of March Blitz-
stein, famaus Jewish-American
composer, who died at Marti-
nique, were cremated without
services.
Blitzstein, 58, had been in
the West Indies completing an
opera commissioned by the
Metropolitan Op e r a Co. of
New York. He apparently was
beaten to death by robbers at
Martinique.
Among Blitzstein's better
known works are "The Cradle
Will Rock," "No for an Answ-
er," "Regina," and his adapta-
tion of " Th e Threepenny
Opera," which ran off-Broad-
way for six years. His father,
the late Samuel Blitzstein, was
a banker here well known
among many Jewish merchants.

Much Decorated General
Succumbs in USSR

LONDON (JTA) — Lt. Gen.
Israel Solomonovitch Beskin,
one of the highest decorated
Soviet army officers, and a Jew,
died in the USSR this weekend,
aged 68, according to a Moscow
dispatch received here. He re-
tired from active service and
has been ill several months, ac-
cording to Moscow sources.
Gen. Beskin held highly re-
sponsible posts in the Red Army
during World War II and, after
the war, headed the Soviet
Union's artillery corps. Among
his decorations were three cita-
tions in the Order of Lenin and
three awards of the Red Banner.

NEW YORK (JTA) — Chone
Gottesfeld, Yiddish playwright
and humorist, died here Mon-
day after a long illness. He
was 73.
Born in Poland, Gottesfeld
came to the United States in
1910 and had been humor edi-
tor of the Jewish Daily For-
ward since 1917. A former
president of the Yiddish Writ-
ers Union, he was vice presi-
dent of that organization at the
