Why does tradition require
a prayer to be said after
visiting the bathroom?

Linguists and Jewish literary
specialists regard this as one
of the most beautiful and mean-
ingful prayers. In this prayer
man thanks the Almighty for
being able to perform the most
elementary of his natural func-
tions. The text of the prayer
was outlined in the Talmud
(Berachoth 60b). The ending has
a double connotation because it
combines the opinions of two
Talmudic scholars each con-
tending that another ending be
used to conclude the prayer.
One part of the ending depicts
the Almighty as the "healer of
all flesh." This makes us ap-
preciate the fact that the funda-
mental procedure of passing off
the body waste is a divinely de-
signed way of healing the body
at each such occasion. The proof
of this is contained in the body
of the prayer which declares
that should one of these pro-
cesses be impaired the human
body could be doomed.
The other part of the ending
declares that the entire system
of bodily functions represents
one of the most wondrous me-
chanisms—yet to be imitated
by the hands of mortal man.
The most marvelous architec-
tural and functional construc-
tion in the world is that of the
human body—and it is at such
occasions when one begins to
appreciate the wonderful engi-
neering system which makes up
the body's functional appara-
tus. Man thus becomes deeply
thankful and spiritually awed.
The wonders of the Almighty
show even man's body to be a
work of holiness—not alone his
soul.
