Civil Liberties Union Explains Efforts in
Behalf of Five Nazis Convicted of Assault

LOS ANGELES, (JTA)—Of-
ficials of the American Civil
Liberties Union asserted that
their efforts to obtain a new
trial for five American Nazi
party members, convicted on
charges of conspiracy and as-
sault, concerned only the issue
of freedom of speech.
The officials made the com-
ment in seeking to correct what
they termed erroneous press
reporting of the ACLU inter-
vention in the case. The five
Nazis were arrested when they
created a scene at an Israel In-
dependence Day rally here.

(JTA) — A 36-
year-old educator was named
as next president of the College
of Jewish Studies here, a con-
stituent of the Chicago Board
of Jewish Education. He is Dr.
David Weinstein, now registrar,
professor of education and as-
sistant to the dean at Hebrew
Teachers College, Brookline,
Mass.
According to Samuel N. Kat-
zin, president of the board of
education here, Dr. Weinstein,
who will assume his new post
Feb. 1, will be the youngest
president in the 40-year history
of the college "and one of the
youngest college presidents in
the world."
Dr. Weinstein, a native of
Boston, holds advanced degrees
from Harvard and the Hebrew
Teachers College. He is the
author of a number of books,
Hebrew - English dictionaries
and works on modern Jewish
education.
